Obituary of William Van Allen

LITTLE FALLS: William Daniel Christopher "Bill" Van Allen, age 70, a lifelong Little Falls resident, passed away unexpectedly, while vacationing with his family in Saranac Lake, on Monday, July 30, 2012. Bill was born in Little Falls on September 20, 1941, the son of the late Francis and Catherine (Keefe) Van Allen. He attended St. Mary's Academy and was a graduate of the Class of 1960. He furthered his education by attending Oklahoma University, Utica College and Ithaca College. On July 11, 1964, Bill was united in marriage to the former Theresa Agnes O'Hara at St. Mary's Church of Little Falls and shared 48 years of happiness, companionship, contentment and unconditional love. For 32 years, Bill was the administrator-owner-operator of Van Allen Nursing Home in Little Falls and was assisted by his wife Theresa in the operation of the nursing home facility. Bill was a member of Holy Family Parish, past president and recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award of the Little Falls Rotary Club, a member of the Little Falls Elk's Lodge and the Camp Outlet "Red Camp". To know Bill was to appreciate a man who loved and protected his family unconditionally. Anytime he was surrounded by his family was precious time. In his quiet, steadfast way, he watched over those he loved and endeared himself not only to his beloved family, but also to many whose lives he touched. He is survived by his adored wife, Theresa of Little Falls; his beloved daughters, Christine Bruins and husband Neil, Lisa Corbett and husband David and Catherine Willman and husband Robert all of Little Falls; his cherished grandchildren, Elizabeth, Sarah, and Mary Bruins; Hannah and William Corbett and Terri Anne, Kristen and Jonathan Willman; his brothers, Frank Van Allen and wife Carol of Massachusettes and Jere Van Allen and wife Lois of East Herkimer; his sisters, Kathe Markwardt and husband Fred of Mohawk and Karen Usselmann of Salisbury; in-laws Maureen Helmers, Monica and Jan Wnuk and Aelene Reilly and many special nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by a son-in-law, Dana Washburn and brothers-in-law, Michael Reilly, Peter Usselmann and Eugene Helmers. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 3, 2012 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 W. Monroe Street, Little Falls, NY, (315)823-2424. Friends and relatives are respectfully invited to attend Bill's funeral service on Saturday, August 4, 2012 at 8:45 a.m. from the chapel of the funeral home and at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Family Parish, corner of John/E. Main Street, Little Falls where his Funeral Mass will be concelebrated by his nephew, Father Mark Reilly and Father Thomas Lawless, Pastor. Procession will then follow to St. Mary's Cemetery, Town of Herkimer where he will be laid to rest. In lieu of floral offerings, expressions of sympathy may be in the form of mass cards and prayers offered for Bill or Holy Family Parish or to the Covenant House, 461 8th Avenue, New York, NY 10001. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Members of the Little Falls Elk's Lodge will conduct a ritualistic service at 5:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
