Obituary of Rose M. Ottaviani

LITTLE FALLS: Rose Mary Genevieve (Canorro) Ottaviani, a lifelong Little Falls resident, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 19, 2012 with her adoring family by her side, after a spirited dance with old age. She was 95 years old, born on June 10th, 1917, and was the daughter of the late Pasquale and Palma (Pinelli) Canorro. She married Peter Ottaviani on October 24th 1946 in St. Joseph's Church. The ceremony was performed by the late Rev. Joseph F. Connolly. Mr. Ottaviani passed away in December of 1983. In the early years, Rose worked at the Melrose Company and then she worked at Metot's Hardware and the Little Posy Shop. She cooked alongside her husband at the Roman Grill for 37 years and finally owned the Rose Ottaviani Catering. Rose was very proud of the years she spent as a Girl Scout Leader and many of her scouts have remained close with her throughout the years. She was an active member of the St. Joseph's Altar Rosary Sodality and was the recipient of an honor bestowed by the Bishops Office, on behalf of her faith community, as a woman who had said, " yes" to God. Rose was the matriarch of her family and for years her kitchen table was the gathering place for meals and counseling sessions where she shared her warmth and her wisdom. She is survived by her dedicated daughter-in-law, Joan Canorro and her devoted grandchildren: Jim Canorro and his partner Sue Alsheimer, Rosemarie Battisti-Bruce and her husband Jack, Colleen Corsi and her husband Sam and Stacie Shepardson and her husband Jeff. She also leaves her beloved great-grandchildren: Jennifer Bacher and her husband Richard, Jeffrey Battisti and his wife Jackie, Jim Battisti and his wife Erica, Justin Battisti and his wife Jessica, Jocelyn Battisti and her husband Jason Young, Jordan Battisti and her fiancé Casper Harteveld, Jessica Battisti, Caitlin Battisti and Cory Boyer, Michael Shepardson and his fiancé Kari Roe, Alexandra Shepardson, Christine McAlister and her husband John, and Allison Corsi and her fiancé David Pelletier. She also leaves fourteen treasured great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. We would like to acknowledge her best friend, Gail Rose, for her lifelong, extraordinary friendship which Rose cherished. Rose was preceded in death by her son Warren W. (Buddy) Canorro, two sisters Mary Cool and Angie Belorit, and one brother Warren V. Canorro . A special thank you goes to Dr. Luke Handy and Nicole Higgins for their skilled and compassionate care. Thank you to the Emergency Room and the entire 3rd floor staff of Little Falls Hospital, each of whom in a special way helped take care of Rose throughout her journey. A special thank you to the Little Falls Fire Department for their kind and professional service and finally to Melissa, Claire, Kristen, Samantha, and Gen from US Cares, and Lori and Nancy who helped with Rose's care. Rose's loved ones will remember her through this quote by Washington Irving, "There is a sacredness in tears. They are not the mark of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are the messengers of overwhelming grief…and unspeakable love." Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 21st, from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 W. Monroe Street, Little Falls, NY (315)823-2424. Friends and relatives are respectfully invited to attend Rose's funeral service on Wednesday, August 22nd, 2012 at 10:15 a.m. from the Chapel of the funeral home and at 11:00 am from Holy Family Parish, corner of John/E. Main Street, Little Falls where her Funeral Mass will be concelebrated by Father Thomas Lawless, Pastor and her nephew, Father John Canorro. Procession will then follow to St. Mary's Cemetery, Town of Herkimer where she will be laid to rest. In lieu of floral offerings, expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of Mass cards and prayers offered for Rose at Holy Family Parish or to a charity of one's choice. The family is being cared for by Harry J. Enea, Funeral Director.
