Obituary of Joseph Morra

Herkimer: Mr. Joseph H. Morra, 87, of Park Avenue, passed into the loving hands of the Lord on Thursday, August 30, 2012 in Valley Health Services, Herkimer. Joe was born on March 15, 1925 in Herkimer, a son of the late Antonio and Lillian (Annutto) Morra. He spent the major part of his life in Herkimer, and received his education in Herkimer schools, graduating with the Class of 1942. He was married to the late Christine "Kit" Izzo, who passed away on August 30, 1986. Mr. Morra was a member of the United States Coast Guard, and served in the Pacific Theatre from 1943-46. He was part of the LCI "L" #86, and participated in the Battle of Okinawa and the Occupation of Japan. He was a maintenance supervisor with the New York State Thruway Authority for thirty years and also worked for the town of Herkimer. Joe was a faithful member of Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church. He was a member of the Tony R. George Post and the Crusaders. He was instrumental in building a memorial for veterans on William Street. Joe was a devoted family man who enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed many activities during his long retirement, especially golf. Mr. Morra is survived by his longtime beloved companion of over thirty years, Pat Rickard; daughters, Candiss Potter and her husband William of Frankfort, and Deborah Morra Voorhees of Carlton, OR; his son, Dr. Joseph Morra and his wife Maria of Baldwinsville; three grandchildren, Jaime Acquaviva-Chaufty and her husband Jeremy, Christine Morra, and Joseph A. Morra. He also leaves his sisters, Rose Caliguire, Concetta Aiello and her husband James, Angela Bingham and her husband Edward, and Patricia Volo and her husband Robert, all of Herkimer; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is also survived by his in-laws, Angelo Izzo and Anne Oliver. He was predeceased by his parents, Antonio and Lillian, his wife "Kit", and brothers, Benjamin Morra, who died during battle in World War II, and Rocco Morra. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects on Friday, August 31, from 5-8 PM at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington Street, Herkimer (866-1011). Joe's funeral will commence on Saturday, September 1, at 8:30 AM at the funeral home, followed by his Funeral Mass, celebrated by the Reverend Thomas Lawless at 9 AM in Sts. Anthony & Joseph Church, S. Main Street. Burial with full military honors will immediately follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, town of Herkimer. Joe's family would to express their highest gratitude to the nurses and therapist at Valley Health Services, for the superb care and compassion shown during his illness.
