Obituary of Joan T. O'Day

Ilion: Joan T. O'Day, 86, of Ilion and formerly of Milton, FL and Mohawk, passed away peacefully, Friday October 19, 2012, in the Little Falls Hospital, Little Falls, with her loving family by her side. Joan was born on October 16, 1926, in Ilion, the daughter of the late William E. and Mary G. Rowland Mooney. She was a graduate of Mohawk Central High School. On July 7, 1947, Joan was united in marriage to John C. O'Day in Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk. Mr. and Mrs. O'Day resided for many years in Mohawk before moving to Milton, FL and then more recently to Ilion. She was employed as a nurse's aide at the former Herkimer Memorial Hospital, Herkimer. Joan was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk. She was a member of the Rosary Society and Crowley Barnum American Legion Post #25 Auxiliary, Mohawk. Joan was a very talented pianist and an avid reader. During her free time she enjoyed knitting, ceramics, sewing, traveling and most of all socializing with her friends and family while they played cards. Joan was very proud of her Irish heritage and her family. She is survived by her loving and dedicated husband of sixty five years, John; her children and their spouses, Thomas W. and Dawn O'Day of Canastota, Kathleen J. and Gary Tucker of Ilion, John M. "Mike" and Wanwimone O'Day of Milton, FL, Mary R. and David Olbrich of Harrisburg, NC and Daniel P. O'Day of Ilion; her daughter-in-law, Joan L. O'Day of Canastota; her sixteen grandchildren and thirty-three great grandchildren. Joan was predeceased by her sister, Mary Rita Mooney and her son, Christopher J. O'Day on August 29, 2012. Joan's funeral will commence on Tuesday, October 30, 2012, at 10:15 a.m. from the chapel of the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, Town of Frankfort, Ilion and 11 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk, where her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Reverend Mark Cunningham, assisted by Sister Mary Jo Tallman, Parish Life Director. Interment will take place in Mohawk Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects on Sunday, October 28, 2012, from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Contributions, in Joan's memory, may be offered to the St. Jude's Children Hospital or the Alzheimer's Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to the entire nursing staff at the Little Falls Hospital for all of their compassionate care.
