Obituary of Ronald P. Unsinn
Ilion: Mr. Ronald P. Unsinn, 91, of George Street, passed away on Sunday, December 23, 2012 in Faxton-St. Luke's Hospital, New Hartford.
Mr. Unsinn was born on March 7, 1921 in Ilion, a son of the late Joseph and Katherine (Paul) Unsinn. He was a lifelong Ilion resident and a graduate of Ilion High School. Ronald is a veteran of World War II, and served proudly in the United States Navy aboard the USS Hornet.
On June 7, 1947, Ronald and Martha Mary Stewart were married in Richfield Presbyterian Church. Ronald's beloved Martha passed away on September 29, 2011, after a long, happy, and wonderful marriage of 64 years.
Mr. Unsinn was a Foreman for many years with Remington Arms of Ilion. Upon his retirement, he and his wife, Martha, traveled to many places, including Aruba, Alaska, Branson, Missouri, Hawaii, and St. Thomas. He spent his summers at his camp on Canadarago Lake with his family and many friends, and many winters in Florida.
When Ron was a young child in the 1920s, he performed in minstrel shows with his sisters and mother "Kitty." This began his love of singing, and later in life, he was a member of the "German Flatts Barber Shop Quartet." He also enjoyed singing at the Presbyterian Church of Ilion. He was a man of many interests, and particularly enjoyed bowling and golfing, and he participated in both up until just recently. He was part of the WW II Veteran's trip to Washington DC with the Herkimer VFW and derived much pleasure from it. Regardless of the many interests he held, nothing gave him more happiness than his family.
Mr. Unsinn was a member of the Ilion Elks Club and was a recipient of Elk of the Year award. He was also a member of the Mohawk American Legion, Herkimer VFW, and the Ilion Masonic Lodge. He was a Board member of the Remington Arms Employees Club, and started its annual golf tournament.
Ronald leaves behind his loving family; sons, Donald and his wife Jackie of Frankfort, and Douglas and his wife Joan of Florida and Ilion; a daughter, Karen Macrina and her husband Robert of Little Falls; grandchildren, Bethany and Mike Hicks, Melissa and Kevin Macrina, and Brianna, Alyssa, and Amy Unsinn; and great-grandchildren, Joshua, Daniel, and Lauren Hicks; and niece, Shirley Miller and her family.
