Obituary of Janice Marie Streed Handy

ST. JOHNSVILLE- Mrs. Janice Marie Streed Handy, 83, formerly of River Rd. Fort Plain and most recently a resident of Folts Home went home to be with her Lord on Saturday April 13, 2013 at her residence surrounded by her loving family . She was born on April 26, 1929, in Fort Plain; daughter of the late Perry and Lulu (Frederick) Streed. She was the Salutatorian of the Fort Plain High School Class of 1947. On December 27, 1947 she was united in marriage with Keith Raymond Handy. They shared a loving union of over 45 years until his passing on January 19, 1993. One of Janice's greatest accomplishments was being the Editor of Country Folks Farm Paper for many years. She also worked at Beech Nut until 1963 as well as serving on the Governor's Task Force for Agriculture. Janice was a lifelong Grange member and a lifelong organist and member of the Crum Creek Evangelic Lutheran Church. In 2002 she was selected to receive the "Experienced Older Worker" Award in New York State presented by former First Lady Hillary Clinton. Survivors include her sons: Keith Herbert Handy and his wife Juanita of St. Johnsville, Wayne Handy and his wife Sue of St. Johnsville and Dean Handy and his wife Julie of St. Johnsville; her daughters: Ann Marie Carter and her husband Jack of North Carolina, Karen Jones and her husband Tom of St. Johnsville and Marta Doxstader and her husband Paul of Remsen, NY; her brothers: Robert Streed and his wife Martha of Chicago, IL and Don Streed and his wife Brenda of Saratoga; her sisters: Shirley Fero of N. Utica and Thelma Safford and her husband Lee of St. Johnsville; her 24 grandchildren; 45 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her grandson Jason and by her great grandsons Matthew Bohannon and Justin Glynn. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville from 1-3pm & 5-7pm on Monday April 15, 2013. A religious service will take place at 2pm on Tuesday April 16, 2013 at the Evangelic Lutheran Church on Crum Creek Rd. and Twin Church Rd. St. Johnsville with Janice's friend Darlene Spaulding officiating. Burial will follow at the Handy Family's Private Cemetery - Pleasant View Cemetery where she will be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in Janice's name be made to the Crum Creek Church Preservation Society Inc. 43 Walnut St., Canajoharie, NY 13317-1365.
