Obituary of Martin T. Kovac

MOHAWK - Martin "Marty" T. Kovac, age 87, formerly a long time resident of Mohawk, passed away on Sunday, April 14, 2013, at Valley Health Services, Herkimer, where he was a resident. He was born on December 20, 1925, in Mohawk, the son of John and Suzanna (Holovitz) Kovac. Marty was a graduate of Mohawk High School, class of 1944. Mr. Kovac was a veteran of WW II, serving in the US Army as a technician 5th grade in the 1st tank battalion of Headquarters Co. In 1947, he began taking classes at Utica College of Syracuse University and received his degree in education and certification in English from Syracuse University. Marty taught in various local schools, including Frankfort-Schuyler Central School as a Jr. High School English and Social Studies teacher. At one time, Mr. Kovac was an industrial engineer for Remington Rand, Ilion, and a continuity director-writer for WKTV, Utica. He was last employed as a case worker for the Oneida County Dept. of Social Services, Utica. He was married to the former Louise Hawver. From this union were a daughter, Diane, and two sons, Mark and Edward. Martin was a member of the former Mohawk United Methodist Church and a sixty-five year life member of the Mohawk American Legion Post. He was also a member of DAV Stars & Stripes. He is survived by one daughter, Diane Stocking and her husband, Lonnie, of Little Falls; two sons, Mark, of Alaska, and Edward, of Mohawk; his granddaughter, Heather Stocking and companion, Danny Zerott; his grandsons, Aaron Stocking and his wife, Sonia, David, Joshua, and Kyle Kovac; great-grandson, Aiden; his sister, Evelyn Sweet, of Mohawk; and several nieces and nephews. Martin was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, John, Jr., and Samuel; three sisters, Susanne Olyer, Emilia Strickland and Anne Reckeweg. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 19, 2013, at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd., Ilion, with Rev. Robert Wollaber, Pastor of the Morning Star United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Mohawk Cemetery with full military honors. Calling hours are Thursday, April 18, 2013, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Members of the Mohawk American Legion Crowley-Barnum Post #25 will conduct their Ritualistic Service on Thursday, April 18, 2013, at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home. The Kovac family would like to extend a warm heartfelt thank you to the entire staff at Valley Health Services, especially all of the staff on the second floor west for their loving compassionate care shown towards Marty and his family throughout the years.
