Obituary of Eleanore M. Smith

ST. JOHNSVILLE- Eleanore M. Smith, 82, of Mechanic St., passed away on May 1, 2013 at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown with her loving family at her side. She was born on October 11, 1930, in Gloversville, daughter of the late Walter and Lettie (Young) Blood. Eleanore worked as a cook at Swank's Diner in St. Johnsville. She also worked at Nathan Littauer Hospital and Gates Mills in Johnstown where she made gloves. Through the Office for the Aging she stayed active answering phones for the St. Johnsville Police Dept., working at the Fort Plain Library and serving meals for the elderly. Eleanore was a great cook . She loved animals and especially enjoyed playing bingo. Survivors include her children: Shirley Cook and her husband David of Meco, Sharon Gray and her husband Marvin of Ephratah, Barbara Greene and her husband Tom of South Carolina, James Smith and his significant other Annette Hall of Ephratah, John Smith and his wife Pauline of England and Brenda Countryman and her husband David of St Johnsville; her sister Grace Woodcock of Gloversville; her 16 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; 8 great great grandchildren and her nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her grandson David Cook, her lifelong partner Charles Smith and her 9 brothers and sisters. In keeping with Eleanore's wishes there are no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at 1pm on Monday, May 6, 2013 at West St. Johnsville Cemetery with the Rev. David A. Johnson officiating. The family would like to invite everyone back to the Community House on Washington St. after the funeral to share in a celebration of Eleanore's life. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations in Eleanore's name be made to a local Animal Shelter of their choice. The family is being cared for by the Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville, John P. Lewandowski, Funeral Director.
