FAIRFIELD: Mrs. Carla Anne (Ciancio) Smith, age 51, of Fairfield and an active member of the Herkimer community, passed away on Friday morning May 31, 2013 at Crouse Memorial Hospital in Syracuse. Carla was comforted with her loving family at her side. Her passing occurred following a valiant fight with ovarian cancer. She was born on January 20, 1962 in Sharon, CT, daughter of Carlo and Rose (Gasbarra) Ciancio. Carla attended Webutuck High School and went on to obtain a degree in Medical assisting from Dutchess County Community College. She had worked at Sharon Medical Clinic for six years. On July 19, 1981 she joined in marriage with Stephen Smith at Immaculate Conception Church in Amenia, NY. In 1985 Carla and Stephen purchased a family farm in Fairfield, NY and have lived there since. Carla loved to be on the beautiful family property. For 13 years she had worked with Bassett Healthcare. She began as a phlebotomist and was one of three women to work with the coding education department at Bassett. She went on to become a National CPCI and worked part time with BOCES in New Hartford. In fact Carla had designed their CPC program. She retired from CNY Cardiology at St. Elizabeth's in Utica as an administrative assistant. Carla was accomplished in the field of martial arts. She was a black belt in American Gojo Ryu. She taught Tai Chi Chuan (Yang style) at Bailey's Karate in Herkimer and was also a member of the National Coding Society. She was a member of Zen Do Kai Martial Arts Association and a member of the Church of Sts. Anthony & Joseph, Herkimer. The family sends a sincere thanks to the Friday date night crew. They received amazing comfort from many family and friends and exceptional care from Crouse Hospital oncology and ICU units. Survivors include her beloved husband Stephen; her parents Carlo & Rose of Fairfield; children: Andrew Martin Smith and his wife Jamie Sampson of Toledo, OH; and Alessandra Anne Miller & husband Benjamin of Fairfield. She was predeceased by a sister: Carmella Prose. Also surviving are several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends and family are invited to celebrate Carla's life at her calling hours on Tuesday June 4, 2013 from 6-9 PM at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 North Washington Street, Herkimer. The evening will conclude with a prayer. The family is being served by Carla's friend Kevin E. Enea, funeral director. It is the wish of the family that in lieu of flowers donations be considered to Pastor Dwayne Durand's Kuyahoora Community Church Building Fund.
