Obituary of William E. Smith

Mohawk: William E. Smith, 91, of Vrooman Road, Mohawk, passed away at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare on Sunday, July 7, 2013. Mr. Smith was born on December 26, 1921 in Ashland, NJ, a son of the late Eugene and Mabel (Small) Smith. He resided in Mohawk from the age of eight, attended school in Mohawk, and graduated with the Class of 1939. After graduation, he joined the US Army Air Corps and was part of "the greatest generation" serving honorably during World War II, earning the Soldier's Medal. Upon his return, he received a Bachelor's Degree from Cortland State College, and a Masters Degree in Education from Oneonta State College. Mr. Smith taught Junior and Senior High School with the Mohawk Central School system, retiring in 1987, after many years of dedicated service. On May 29, 1942, Bill and Jane Vrooman were married on her family's farm on Vrooman Road in Mohawk. Bill and Jane enjoyed almost 63 years of marriage until her passing on May 21, 2005, just a few days before their anniversary. He was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Little Falls, the Herkimer Elks, serving as House Chairman, and the Mohawk American Legion, Crowley-Barnum Post. Mr. Smith was an avid deer hunter and fisherman, and loved his hunting camp in the Adirondacks. Bill is survived by his loving children: a son, Donald R. and his wife Mary of Mohawk, and a daughter, Barbara J. Lewthwaite and her husband Robert of Rome; grandchildren: Bradley and his wife Leslie Lewthwaite and Ryan Lewthwaite and Haley Smith; great-grandchildren: Evan and Ashton Lewthwaite; and a sister-in-law: Betty Buehler; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and students. He was predeceased by his brothers: Kendall, Robert, and Donald R. and sisters: Dorothy Tull and Ruth Young. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects on Friday, July 12, 2013 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, Ilion (town of Frankfort). The Reverend Dr. Steven A. Scarcia, Rector, will celebrate Bill's Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 10:00 AM in Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 588 Albany Street, Little Falls. Procession will follow to Mohawk Cemetery, John Street, Mohawk, where he will be laid to rest next to his beloved Jane. The Herkimer ELKS will conduct their ritualistic service on Friday evening at 6:00 PM and the Mohawk American Legion will conduct theirs at 6:30 PM. Those wishing may make a donation in William's memory to a scholarship fund to be set up at the school. You may make checks out to either Donald R. Smith or Barbara Lewthwaite; envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Kevin E. Enea, Funeral Director, is caring for the family.
