Obituary of Jack D Tompson

St. Johnsville - Cherry Valley: Mr. Jack D. Tompson, 79, of Campbell Road, Cherry Valley, NY and a former resident of St. Johnsville, passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 in St. Joseph's Hospital, Syracuse. Jack was blessed with the support and presence of his loving family at the time of his passing. Jack received compassionate care from the doctors and nurses in the SICU at St. Joseph's Hospital. Jack was born on February 10, 1934 in Little Falls, a son of the late Alvah G. and Zylphia M. (Countryman) Tompson Lenz. He attended St. Johnsville Schools and was a Graduate of the St. Johnsville High School, Class of 1951. Following high school, Jack attended Cobleskill Agriculture and Tech College, having graduated with his college degree in 1953. Following school, Jack enlisted with the United States Army. He served in Korea and was the recipient of a Good Conduct Medal and a National Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1955. Jack was married to Janet Lee Suits of St. Johnsville on February 21, 1959. Together they had three daughters. On January 16, 1994 Jack joined in marriage with his wife of 19 years, the former Suzanne M. Webster. The couple celebrated their marriage in Binghamton, NY. Mr. Tompson worked as a financial adviser with Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown. Prior to that, he worked for Beech Nut in Canajoharie and Little Falls Hospital. Jack fondly remembered his 'earlier years' of employment with Palatine Dye. Jack was a member of Cherry Valley First Presbyterian Church, Cherry Valley American Legion, and was an over 55-year member of the St. Johnsville Masonic Lodge No. 611 F. & A.M. He was very ambitious throughout his life and was an avid worker around his home. He is survived by his beloved wife, Suzanne; daughters: Jennifer Whitney and her husband Todd of Duanesburg, Jill Tompson of East Syracuse, and Julia Tompson of St. Johnsville; grandchildren: Mac Tompson, Benjamin Czelusniak and wife Cana, Marcus Whitney, and Mitchel Whitney; two great grandchildren: Grace and Ella; and a brother, Tom Tompson of Tenessee; along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jack is also survived by two stepsons: Michael Clapper and wife Kim of Springfield, and Ronald Clapper and his wife Jennifer of Maryland; a stepgrandson: John Czelusniak, Jr.; along with six additional stepgrandchildren and two brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law. He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Kelsey Whitney and most recently by his mother-in-law, Myra R. Webster. Funeral services with military honors will be held on Saturday September 7, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church, 56 Alden Street, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Ronald Fralick, Pastor, officiating. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family in the family plot in St. Johnsville Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to pay their respects at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center Street, St. Johnsville on Friday evening, September 6, 2013 from 5 until 7:30 PM. The brethren of the St. Johnsville Masonic Lodge No. 611 are asked to gather at the funeral home to conclude the visitation with a ritualistic service that will begin at 7:30 PM. It is the wish of the family that contributions in Jack's memory be considered to the Ayers Memorial Animal Shelter, 133 Hilltop Road, Sprakers, NY 12166. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
