MOHAWK - Raymond "Pete" A. Baldwin, age 89, formerly of 15 Center St., Mohawk, and Prindle Apts., Ilion, passed away on Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at Folts Home, Herkimer, where he resided. He was born on July 2, 1924, in Pyrites, NY, the son of James and Elizabeth (Farmer) Baldwin. "Pete" graduated from Mohawk High School and Utica College. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Army. On August 9, 1952, he was married to Alice Byrnes at St. Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer. She died on January 5, 2002. "Pete" owned and operated Pete's Grocery Store on E. Center St. in Mohawk from 1959 to 1979. He was later employed at Big M in Mohawk from 1981 to 1995. Mr. Baldwin was the oldest member of the Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post # 25 of Mohawk. He was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk. Pete was well known for his sense of humor and great generosity. He enjoyed coaching Little League Baseball in Mohawk for many years, was a proud veteran of The Greatest Generation, and was a devout Catholic. Survivors include his sister, Ruth Riel, of Mohawk; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister, Mae Loughlin; two brothers, Robert and James Baldwin; and his nephews, Robert Baldwin, Jr. and Michael Riel. Funeral services will be held 9:00 a.m., Thursday, October 17, 2013, at the Graves-Applegate-Day Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd., Ilion, and 10:00 a.m., at the Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Mark Cunningham, Sacramental Minister. Interment will be in Mohawk Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, October 16, 2013, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Members of the Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post # 25 of Mohawk will conduct ritual services on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at 5:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
