Obituary of James E Dougherty

Herkimer: Mr. James E. Dougherty, 85, of N. Bellinger Street, passed away on Monday, October 21, 2013 in Bassett Health Care, Cooperstown. Mr. Dougherty was born on January 26, 1928 in Mahonoy Plane, Pennsylvania, son of the late Thomas J. and Ann (McConnen) Dougherty. He was a graduate of Gilberton High School and the Lincoln School of Technology in Cleveland, Ohio. He also received schooling in the military and took courses at Herkimer County Community College. Jim enlisted in the United States Navy in 1945 and re-enlisted three times, serving during World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam. He retired after 23 years of dedicated and exemplary service to our country. On November 14, 1953, he and the late beloved Ann Goldsmith were married in St. Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer. They had three children. During their time together the family traveled extensively all over the United States to spend time with family and friends. Jim was employed as an engineer with Divine Brothers and Chicago Pneumatic in Utica, NY. He was an active parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Church and served as an usher for many years. He was also a member of the Herkimer VFW, and is a past commander of the post. He is survived by two sons, James Jr. of Albany and Henry and his wife Jean of Fort Worth, TX; grandchildren, Matthew and his wife Kathleen Dougherty of Albany and Meagan Dougherty. He is survived by one brother, Thomas Dougherty of PA. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Ann and daughter Joan. The Very Reverend Mark Cunningham will celebrate Jim's Funeral Mass on Thursday, October 31, 2013 at 10:00 AM in St. Francis de Sales Church, N. Bellinger Street, Herkimer. Burial with full military honors will take place in Calvary Cemetery, W. German Street, immediately following the Mass.
