Obituary of Gregory Tanner

MOHAWK - Gregory "Greg" Tanner, age 62, a long time resident of 180 Warren Rd., Mohawk, passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2013, at Little Falls Hospital. Greg was born in Herkimer, NY, on January 26, 1951, son to Ernest David, and Joan Barbara (Palmer) Tanner. He was educated in the Mohawk School System and graduated in 1969. Following high school he attended college, earning an AAS degree from Hudson Valley CC, a BS degree from SUNY College at Brockport, and permanent teaching certification through Upper Division College in Utica. He began his teaching career at Campbell Central School (Corning area) in 1974. He was hired as an elementary teacher (grade 6) in the Mohawk Central School system in 1975 and spent the next thirty-two years there, before retiring in 2007. During some of those years, he spent time coaching different sports, i.e. football, track & field, golf and bowling. On November 12, 1982, Greg was joined in marriage to Betsy L. Rathbun. They shared a very close and loving marriage and were devoted to each other for over thirty+ years. Never one to sit still, Greg spent his free time doing many different jobs dealing with construction. He was an accomplished woodworker and enjoyed "tinkering" in his workshop. Another true love of his was the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and shared that passion with his family and several very close friends, both here in the states, and in several Canadian Provinces. The stories he told of their adventures afield seemed never ending and full of pure entertainment. He also spent thirty years as an official Boone and Crockett measurer for the New York State Big Buck Club. Greg is survived by his loving wife, Betsy; his son, Michael and his wife, Denise, of Clinton, CT; his son, Marc and his wife, Katherine, of Salisbury, NY; his daughter, Tara, of Little Falls; four grandchildren, Julia, Lily, Evan and Madolyn; his brother, Allen Tanner and his wife, Janet; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Allan "Skip" Rathbun and his wife, Diane, of Ilion, William "Bud" Rathbun, of Utica, Dean Rathbun and his wife, Lorel, Arthur Rathbun, and Lynn Sellers and her husband, David, all of Ilion; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents. Greg's Memorial Service will be held 6:00 p.m., Monday, November 4, 2013, at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd., Ilion, with Rev.
