Obituary of Bernard J. Moynihan

Herkimer: Bernard J. Moynihan, Jr., 77, of Ridgewood Road, passed away unexpectedly at home on Sunday, November 3, 2013. Bernard was born on March 2, 1936 in Little Falls, a son of the late Bernard J. and Mary (Flynn) Moynihan, Sr. He graduated from St. Mary's Academy in Little Falls, received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education at SUNY Brockport, and his Masters in Guidance at Cortland State. He is a veteran of the United States Army. On July 6, 1963 Bernard and the former Gail Ver Straete were married by the Reverend Regan in St. Mary's Church, Little Falls. They were devoted to each other and their family, and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Mr. Moynihan was of the Catholic faith and very often attended Mass at St. Francis de Sales Church in Herkimer. He was last employed as a Guidance Counselor at Canajoharie Central School. He also coached basketball and taught Physical Education at Herkimer High School. Bernard loved his family, and upon his retirement, he loved to spend time with his grandchildren, and attended all of their sports activities. He enjoyed golf and was a member of the Little Falls Monday League. Bernie was a real sports enthusiast and a big fan of Notre Dame and the Yankees. His loving family survives him, his wife Gail; children, Paula Doyle and her husband Paul Petell of Niskayuna, Kevin Moynihan and his wife Kathleen of Troy, Brian Moynihan and his wife Kellee of Westminster, MD; grandchildren, Meghan, Timothy, and Erin Doyle, Liam Moynihan, and Justine, Declan, Ceane, and Holly Moynihan; sisters, Kathleen Moynihan of Little Falls; his aunt and uncle, Peter & Frances Moynihan; nieces, Patricia Moynihan, Erin Moynihan Caswell; and a nephew, Sean Moynihan. He was predeceased by his parents, Bernard Sr. and Mary, and brothers, James and William Moynihan. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects on Friday, November 8, 2013 from 4:00 until 6:00 PM at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 W. Monroe Street, Little Falls. Bernard's funeral will begin with prayer at the funeral home at 9:00 AM on Saturday, November 9, 2013, followed by his Funeral Mass celebrated at 9:30 AM by the Reverend Thomas Lawless in Holy Family Parish Church, East Main Street, Little Falls. Procession will follow to St. Mary's Cemetery, town of Herkimer, where he will be laid to rest. Those wishing may contribute in Bernard's memory to the American Cancer Society, 100 Lomond Court, Utica, NY 13502. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
