Obituary of Angelo M Staffo

Little Falls: Angelo M. Staffo, 91, of Arthur Street, and a lifelong Little Falls resident, passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 in Folts Home, Herkimer, surrounded by his loving family. Angelo was born on September 30, 1922 in Little Falls, a son of the late Vincenzo and Estella (DiBlasio) Staffiero. He was a graduate of Little Falls High School, Class of 1940. He and the former Mary Angela Scarano were married on October 19, 1947 in St. Joseph’s Church, Little Falls. They were devoted to each other and recently celebrated 66 years of marriage. Mr. Staffo was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Ninth Army Air Corps from December 26, 1942 and was honorably discharged on August 31, 1945 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served as a tail gunner on a B-26 bomber, flying 37 missions over France. On his 38th mission, his plane was downed, at which time he was directed to “bail out.” He was rescued by members of the French Underground and was harbored in “enemy territory” for four months, finally being liberated after the D Day Invasion. For his exemplary service and bravery, he received the Air Medal with Silver Oak Leaf Cluster, the European Campaign Medal, WW II Victory Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. He was later awarded the New York State Conspicuous Service Cross with Gold Cross Shield. He was a lifelong communicant of Holy Family Parish, the former St. Joseph’s Church. Angelo was a machinist at Chicago Pneumatic Tool Corp., Utica, retiring after 27 years. He was a member of the DeCarlo-Staffo Post No. 8 in Little Falls. He was an avid reader and made many visits to the Little Falls Library. He loved golf and the Little Falls Golf Course, accomplishing not one, but two “holes in one.” He is survived by his loving wife, Mary; a daughter, Anne M. Perra and her husband Gregg of New Hartford; two sons, Robert J. Staffo and his companion Maxine Morrow of Greer, SC, and William E. Staffo of Little Falls; 3 grandchildren, Christopher G. Perra, Jaclyn G. Perra, and Alexis Mary Staffo; a sisterin-law, Jeanette Scarano Stonesifer; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by four brothers, Rocco, Michael, Nicholas, and First Lieutenant John Charles Staffo, who was killed in action during WW II; two sisters, Lena Battisti and Rose Raiello; along with his brother-in-law, Roy Stonesifer. The Reverend David Berberian will celebrate Angelo’s Funeral Mass at Holy Family Parish Church, E. Main Street, on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at Noon. Military honors will be accorded at the Church at the conclusion of the service, and burial will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery in the spring. Angelo’s family would like to thank the staff of Folts Home for their kind and compassion care. Those wishing may contribute in Angelo’s memory to the Little Falls Library, 706 E.
