Obituary of Theodore E. Russell

MOHAWK - Theodore "Ted" E. Russell, age 93, of Columbia St., Mohawk, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, December 5, 2013, at home, with his loving wife Jean by his side. He was born on January 25, 1920 in Norwalk, CT, the son of Dr. William F. and Christine (Smith) Russell. Ted graduated from Norwalk High School, class of 1938 and Middlebury College, class of 1942. He had enrolled in Tufts University as a pre-med student, when he enlisted in the US Army. He was a veteran of WW II serving in the US Army Infantry for five years rising to the rank of Captain and involved in the Normandy Invasion. Ted's second love after medicine was scouting and after five years in service decided to enter into professional Scouting. Ted graduated from the National Boy Scout Training School in Medham, NJ. He became the Field Scout Executive at Adirondack Council, Saranac Lake in 1946 where he met and married Jean Hutchins in 1949 which resulted in a blessed union of sixty-four years. The Russells moved to Utica in 1950 where Ted became Assistant Scout Executive and stayed until 1957 when they moved to Mohawk. Ted became the Scout Executive for the General Herkimer Council for twenty-five years retiring in 1982. He received the Silver Beaver Award, and was a member of the Camp Russell Camping Committee after his retirement. Ted was a registered Scout for eighty-two years. Ted was a fifty year member, church warden, vestryman, Supt. of Sunday School, and senior warden of the Grace Episcopal Church, Mohawk. He was a member of the Herkimer Rotary Club serving as Secretary and President, writing the history of the club and receiving the Paul Harris Fellow Award. He was past President of Kappa Delta RHO Fraternity. He was a member of the Mohawk American Legion and Malone Masonic Lodge. Mr. Russell was a member and volunteer of the Herkimer Co. Historical Society, Habitat for Humanity and worked with Youth at Risk. Ted was very active in the Bicentennial celebration and was an avid gardener and Yankee fan. Survivors include his wife, Jean; his daughter, Betsy Russell - Orr and her husband, William "Chip" Orr, of Penn Yan, NY; his grandchildren, Kim Weeker and her husband, Brett, of Florida, Alyson and Jeremy Orr, of Penn Yan, NY; his niece, Alison Russell and husband, Walt Wadlow, and daughter, Isobelle, of Santa Cruz, CA; his beloved Brazilian foreign exchange "daughter" Angie Moreira; and several cousins in the US and Scotland. He was predeceased by his son, Richard "Dick" H. Russell on February 24, 1988 and his brother, William Russell. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 10, 2013, at the Grace Episcopal Church, 9 E. Main St., Mohawk, where the Eucharist will be celebrated by Father William Wheeler, Vicar. Father Robert Witt will be the Homilist. Spring burial will be in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Saranac Lake, NY. Calling hours are Monday, December 9, 2013, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd. (Main St.) Ilion. The Mohawk Crowley Barnum American Legion service will be held at 5:30 p.m., Monday, December 9, 2013 at the funeral home.
