Obituary of Mary Elizabeth Blackman

CEDARVILLE - Mrs. Mary Elizabeth "Betty" (Wellenstein) Blackman, age 82, beloved wife of Charlie Blackman, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love and support of her family on Monday afternoon, December 30, 2013 at Valley Health Services. Born in Ilion, NY on August 6, 1931, Betty was the daughter of the late John and Jennie (Blum) Wellenstein. Raised and educated locally, she was a graduate of West Winfield High School and continued her education graduating from the Utica School of Commerce. On April 14, 1956 she was united in marriage to Charles Blackman; a 57 year union built on love, support and mutual respect. As the matriarch of the Blackman family, Betty was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and taking care of her family always came first. She had a keen sense of humor, was a talented seamstress, crafter and enjoyed cooking in her spare time. Betty was an active member in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, East Herkimer. She is survived by her husband, Charlie; her children, Joyce Preston and husband Stephen of LaQuinta, CA, Eric Blackman and wife Carol of Ormond Beach, FL, and Charlene Blake and husband Andrew of West Winfield; eight grandchildren; two great grandchildren; her in-laws, Kenneth Blackman and wife Terri, Harold (Jake) LaFayette and wife Brenda, George LaFayette and wife Julie and Lana Dimming and husband Jesse; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her sisters, Grace Brown, Doris Kimm and Ruth Mosher and her brothers, Allan, Fred and Earl Wellenstein. Her family would like to acknowledge the staff of Valley Health Services for the special attention, care and compassion shown to Betty during her time spent there. Those wishing to express an act of kindness may make a donation to the Cedarville Volunteer Fire Department in Betty's Memory; envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Betty's funeral service will take place on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 317 Gros Blvd., East Herkimer, NY. Family and friends may pay their respects from 4-6 p.m. on Friday, January 10, 2014 at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, Ilion, NY (Town of Frankfort) 315-894-8000. Interment will take place at Cedarville Cemetery in the spring of 2014. Her funeral arrangements are under the direction of Harry & Kevin Enea, Funeral Directors.
