Obituary of Helen Irene Ives

Miss Helen Irene Ives 98 of 926 State Rt 29 Salisbury, a retired elementary teacher and local historian, died Tuesday January 28, 2014 at her residence comforted by the love of her family. Miss Ives was born in Little Falls, NY on December 8th, 1915 the daughter of Fred A. and Irene (Sweet) Ives, and attended school in a one-room school house in Salisbury Center. She continued her education by graduating from Dolgeville High School class of 1933 and then continued by graduating from State Normal School in Oneonta in 1936. She taught school in a one -room school house in Salisbury Corners for three years and then took a position in the West Canada Valley Central School as an elementary teacher where she taught for 37 years before retiring in 1977. Helen was a member of the West Canada Valley Retired Teachers Association, Herkimer County Retired Teachers, and the New York State Retired Teachers Association. She was also a member of the Salisbury Historical Society, serving as President, Vice-President, and Secretary for many years. She also served as a Trustee for the former Universalist Church of Dolgeville, and as the Town of Salisbury Historian since 1996. She was also a Trustee for the Salisbury Rural Cemetery Association, and a Life member of the Auskerada- Maquaes- Rock City Chapter #204 Order of Eastern Star. Helen was the first recipient of the Salisbury Citizenship Award for her dedication to the community in 2010. She is survived by her nephews and their wives Frederick & Betty Lou Ives with whom she resided with and took special care of her, Edward C. & Lisa Howard of Sarasota, FL, grandnieces Shannon Merrill of Dryden, NY and Heather Rothwell and her husband Jim of Lititz, Pa. , a grandnephew Kyle T. Howard of Johnstown, NY. She was predeceased by a sister Cornelia Ives Howard, a Brother & Sister in law Charles & Dorothy Ives a niece & her husband Cheryl & Archie Darling and a brother in law Edward W. Howard. Funeral services will be held Saturday February 1st, 2014 at 1PM at the Roberts & Enea Funeral Home 3 Faville Avenue Dolgeville, with the Rev. Lynn Lockwood, Pastor of the Salisbury Center United Methodist Church officiating. Friends may call on Saturday morning from 11Am until the time of the services. Memorials may be made to the Salisbury Historical Society or to the Salisbury Fire Department in her honor. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
