Obituary of Lucia P. Devera

HERKIMER - Lucia Phyllis "Babe" Devera, age 79, whose family home for many years was on Eastern Avenue in Herkimer, passed away on Tuesday morning, the 18th of February 2014, in the Mohawk Valley Healthcare Center in Ilion, NY after a courageous battle with cancer with her loving nieces at her side. At the time of her passing she was living at Galinsky Apartments in Herkimer. She was born on December 12, 1934 in Herkimer, NY, a daughter of the late Michael and Maria (Wrobel) Devera. She was educated in Herkimer schools, graduating with the Class of 1953. She went on to attend and graduate from Mohawk Valley Community College and began her long business career at Munger's and later Howland's in Herkimer. When that store closed she continued her career at the Holwand's store in New Hartford retiring in 1999. She loved gardening and spending time in the back yard with her cats. When she moved to the Galinsky Apartments in Herkimer you could always find her in the community room working on jigsaw puzzles and working on her word search puzzles. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother Michael, Jr., and her sister Mary, as well as her sister and brother in law Helen and Peter Merena, her nephew Peter Michael Merena and nephew in law Brian Swayze. She is survived by her nieces, Karran Swayze, Maryann Dolence and her husband, Michael, Sylvia Malone and her husband, Thomas; and many great nieces. In accordance with Lucia's wishes there are no calling hours. Burial in the family plot in Herkimer will take place in the spring.
