Obituary of Rena A. Scialdo

HERKIMER: Mrs. Rena (Mornelli )Scialdo , 87, of Steuben Road , Herkimer , New York and Lauderdale By the Sea, Florida, passed away peacefully at Holy Cross Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 with the love and support of her family by her side. Rena was born on March 13, 1926 in Little Falls, New York, a daughter of the late Angelo Mornelli and Isola (Forestieri) Mornelli. She was a lifelong valley resident living in Little Falls and Herkimer. Rena received her education in Little Falls schools. She and Rudolph F. Scialdo were married by the Reverend Lynch in St. Joseph's Church, Little Falls, and together shared a long and devoted union for sixty three years. Mrs. Scialdo was employed for many years as an associate at Derbys in the Village of Herkimer and as a manager at Grand Leader in Little Falls. She also co-owned the Herkimer Diamond Mines and KOA Kampground with her husband from 1980-1997 and served as the property's concierge for many years. Rena volunteered with the Parent Teachers Association at St Joseph's Church and School in Herkimer, was an honorary member of the Herkimer Lions Club and was a parishioner of Sts. Anthony & Joseph Church, Herkimer. Rena had a great passion for the sunshine, beach and water aerobics with the "Water Rockettes" girls. She was a selfless, loving, caring woman who was always concerned about the needs of those she loved. She lived life to the fullest, and "What" a sense of humor!!!! Rena loved socializing in the good company of her family and friends, and always treasured cooking her Tuesday Pasta Nights. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She immensely enjoyed her family and friends and was very endeared to her three grandsons. Rena was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She leaves behind her husband Rudolph Scialdo; a daughter, Dr. Renee Scialdo Shevat and husband, Sam Shevat; son, Rudolph Scialdo II and wife, Deborah Dempsey Scialdo; and three beloved grandchildren, Samuel Shevat III ,Rudolph John Shevat and William Scialdo. She also leaves behind one sister, Olga Fusco; brothers, Harry Mornelli and Bonnie Loschiavo, Ronnie Mornelli and Barbara Schwartz, Lucy Yturralde and numerous nieces, nephews, godchildren and friends. Her brother Gino Mornelli, brother-in-law, Greg Fusco, sister-in-law Connie Mornelli, sister, Elda Varano and husband Greg Varano, Roland and Marian Scialdo, William and Mary Scialdo, Michael and Lena Scialdo, Ida Scialdo Guzzo and Thomas Guzzo, Andrew and Marie Scialdo, Marshall and Lucy Scialdo; nieces Kathy Varano Bortniak and Andrea Scialdo, nephews Benjamin Fusco , Salvatore Fusco, Gregory Paul Mornelli and great nephews Sgt Marc Anthony Scialdo and Cory Scialdo, predeceased Rena. The Scialdo Family will receive friends and relatives at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington Street, Herkimer, NY (315)866-1011 on Sunday, March 2, 2014 from 3-7 PM. Funeral services will begin with prayer at the Funeral Home at 8:45 AM on Monday, March 3rd. Her Funeral Mass celebrated by the Reverend Terence Healy will follow at 9:30 AM in Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church, South Main Street, Herkimer. Rena will be interred next to her family in the spring at St. Mary's Cemetery on Route 5, Town of Herkimer. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the surgeons and staff at Holy Cross Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for the care and compassion shown to Rena. The family would also like to thank the many lifelong friends at North Leisure Gardens where Rena and her husband Rudy resided for 45 years during the winter months. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution in Rena's memory may do so to the following organizations: the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society of the Mohawk Valley (Utica office) the Woman's Imaging Center upgrade at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown or the Herkimer Lions Club. Envelopes will be made available at the funeral home. The Herkimer Lions Club is asked to gather as a group at 5 PM at the funeral home on Sunday.
