Obituary of Elizabeth A. Volk

EAST HERKIMER - Mrs. Elizabeth A. "Liz" (McEachern) Volk, age 93, a longtime resident of Downey Avenue, East Herkimer, NY , passed away with her family at her side on Friday, March 14, 2014, at Somers Manor Nursing Facility in Somers, NY. She was born on May 16, 1920 in Mohawk, NY a daughter of the late Frank and Josephine (Corcoran) McEachern. She attended Mohawk schools, was very active in the basketball program and a graduate of Mohawk High School. Liz was united in marriage with Morris C. "Bud" Volk on December 31, 1949 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Mohawk with Father Brennock officiating. The couple shared in a loving union of over 56 years until the passing of Bud on June 21, 2006. At one time Liz worked with Mohawk Data Sciences and Standard Furniture as well as Remington Arms. She was last employed with Dr. Donald R. Davidson in Ilion, NY as a receptionist. She was a communicant of the Church of Sts. Anthony & Joseph in Herkimer. Liz was a member of the church Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Sacred Heart Society, the Crafty Ladies and served as a church Eucharistic Minister. Elizabeth enjoyed reading, word search puzzles and loved a good game of cards. It didn't matter what kind as long as she could play. Liz also looked forward to 4pm every day so she could have her afternoon "high ball". She was happiest when she was surrounded by family and friends. She is survived by her daughters: Cecelia V. "Cis" Graves of Somers, Judith A. Mosher and her husband Daryl of Stratford, her siblings: a brother William J. McEachern of Spencertown, and Jane Smith of Far Hills, NJ, 4 grandchildren: Jeffrey S. Graves and wife Dr. Athena Graves, D.D.S. of Plattsburgh, Theresa A. Volk Kluge and husband Tim of Dolgeville, Matthew H. Mosher, and Michael P. Mosher of Stratford; 10 great grandchildren, several beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-law: Francis Crist of Richfield Springs. She was pre-deceased by her husband Bud and her daughter: Colleen Lynch. The family would like to express sincere gratitude to the excellent care givers Elizabeth had. They made it possible for her to remain in her home until this past September. Also, to the faculty and staff of Somer's Manor for the compassionate care they extended. A Mass of Christian burial and funeral services will be held later this spring at which time family and friends will be notified. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers all memorial contributions may be made to the East Herkimer Fire Department or the East Herkimer Fish and Game Club. Envelopes will be available at the Enea Family funeral home, North Washington Street location.
