Obituary of Elizabeth Hammond

MOHAWK — Elizabeth A. Hammond, 87, of Henry Street, Mohawk, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 10, 2014, at the Folts Home in Herkimer. Mrs. Hammond was born in Jordanville on March 4, 1927, the daughter of Frank and Anna Minciel Katovitch. Mrs. Hammond was a wonderful wife and mother with a kind and gentle spirit that touched all who knew her. She was an avid homemaker, gardener, reader and maker of arts and crafts with a love of peacefulness and beauty. Known as Betty, Mrs. Hammond was a 1944 graduate of Van Hornesville Central School. On July 31, 1948, she married Frederick B. Hammond of Ilion. Mrs. Hammond worked for the Ilion optometrist Robert Luke in the 1940s and '50s and was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Church of Mohawk. Survivors include her loving husband of 66 years, Frederick; her son, Mark, of Mohawk; her beloved sister, Harriet Gumport, of Catskill, NY; and a number of nieces and nephews in New York, Texas, California, Hawaii and elsewhere. Mrs. Hammond was predeceased by two sisters, Stella Perry, of Ventura, Calif., and Evelyn Breen, of Midland, Texas; and three brothers, Walter Katovitch, of Delhi, NY, and Daytona Beach, FL, Frank Katovitch, of Fort Plain and Edward Katovitch, of Mohawk. Mrs. Hammond's family thanks the caregivers at the Folts Home for their care and compassion during her stay there. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to the charity of your choice. A prayer service will be held at the Mohawk Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
