Obituary of Anna Holod

LITTLE FALLS - Mrs. Anna Holod, age 90 of Little Falls, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday morning May 3, 2014 at Folts Nursing & Rehabilitation in Herkimer. She had lived on Furnace Street for many years and most recently at the Rockton Plaza. Mrs. Holod was born on November 9, 1923 in Ukraine, a daughter of the late Pavlo and Wladislava (Gilakevich) Kirianowa. She attended school in the Ukraine and resided there until the age of 18. When World War II began, she was taken by the German government to Germany to work in farming during the war. It was there that she met her husband Peter, and they were married on June 4, 1945. It was a loving and devoted union of 59 years until his passing on June 3, 2004. After the war, they remained in Germany, residing in a displaced persons camp run by the United Nations Refugee Association (UNRA). This camp was set up for people whose countries no longer existed, as they were occupied by Russia at the end of the war. They remained there for three years until 1948, when they were able to move to France. There they both worked at an orphanage. In 1956, they were fortunate to make the trip to America and settled in Little Falls with Peter's relatives. Mrs. Holod was employed at several dress factories in Little Falls for twenty years, retiring in 1976. Mrs. Holod is survived by her sister, Valerie Chamytona, of Ukraine; a nephew, Mykola,of Webster, NY; and her dearest friends, Jeananne Warner and the Krywka family of Little Falls. She is so appreciative of their friendship and help over the years as well as all of the help from Peter's relatives. She also has nieces and nephews in the Ukraine. In addition to her loving husband and parents, she was predeceased by three sisters. Anna was an active member of the former St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church of Little Falls until its closing. She was a communicant of the Holy Family Parish. She and Peter were volunteers at the Kateri's Family Thrift store in Little Falls for ten years and were members of the Ukrainian Home. Mrs. Holod was grateful to her many friends and relatives for the abundance of kindness through the years and wished to extend a very warm thank you. Her funeral will begin Wednesday May 7, 2014 at 10:30 AM from The Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 West Monroe Street, Little Falls, NY where prayer will be offered. Relatives and friends are invited to also attend her Mass of Christian Burial, celebrated by Reverend Terence Healy on Wednesday at 11:00 AM at the Holy Family Parish Church, corner of East Main & John Streets in Little Falls. Following the mass, Mrs. Holod will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband in St. Mary's Cemetery, town of Herkimer.
