Obituary of John P. Sarafin

HERKIMER: John P. Sarafin, 90, a long time Herkimer resident, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, June 17, 2014 at Folts Home, Herkimer. Born in Richfield Springs, NY on October 15, 1923, John was the son of the late Martin and Mary (Hugick) Sarafin. Raised and educated locally, he was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School. On July 7, 1951, he married the former Clara L. Witkowski in St. Joseph's Church, Richfield Springs; with whom he shared 62 years as true lifetime companions. John worked as a machinist for Chicago Pneumatic Tools, Utica until his retirement. He was a former member of the Herkimer Elks Lodge, Holy Name Society and was a parishioner of Sts. Anthony & Joseph Parish, Herkimer. John's foremost priority was his role of a loving and supportive husband, father, grandfather and brother. His life was dedicated to his loved ones, especially his grandchildren and he was always there for them with his love and care. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and bowling. He is survived by his beloved wife, Clara, his children, Joseph Sarafin and wife Kathy of Frankfort, Walter Sarafin and wife Karen of LaPlata, MD, John Sarafin and wife Pamela of Lancaster, MA, Estelle Rombough of Fulton, NY, along with his cherished grandchildren, Michelle and Matthew Katz, Julie and Sal Acquaviva, Brian and Lacey Sarafin, Jenna Sarafin and Nathan Link, Simeon Rombough, Jr., Christopher and Christina Rombough, Heather and Matthew Anelli, Cooper Sarafin, Samantha Sarafin, Ethan Sarafin and Nina Sarafin, and his great grandchildren, Victoria, Alexandra, Lily, Ivy, Anderson, Chloe, Bella, Dominic, Tony, Kim and Tyler. He is also survived by his brothers, Paul Sarafin and wife Linda of the Town of Columbia and Charles Sarafin of Florida, his sisters, Marion Staruck and husband Steve of Jordanville, Martha Stark of East Herkimer, Jennie Buddle and husband Bob of Richfield Springs, Ann Szeflinski of Richfield Springs and Katherine Kryszuk of Utica and many in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brothers, Stanley, Leon, Martin and Joseph Sarafin. Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2014 from 9:00-10:30 a.m. at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 N. Washington Street, Herkimer, NY (315) 866-1011. His funeral service will commence at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning from the chapel of the funeral home where a prayer service will take place, and at 11:00 a.m. from Sts. Anthony and Joseph Church, S. Main Street, Herkimer, NY where his Funeral Mass will be offered by Reverend Terence Healy, assisted by Deacon James Bower. Interment will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery, Town of Herkimer privately and at the convenience of the family. Those wishing to express an act of kindness in the form of memorial contributions may consider St. Jude's Children's Hospital, The American Cancer Society or The Alzheimer's Association; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
