Obituary of Malcolm E. Rathbun

MOHAWK: Malcolm E. "Mal" Rathbun, 78, a Mohawk and previous Dolgeville resident, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at his home with the love and support of his family by his side. Born in Mohawk on April 24, 1936, Malcolm was the son of the late John and Bertha (Burger) Rathbun. Raised and educated locally, he was a graduate of Richfield Springs Central School Class of 1954. Malcolm proudly and honorably served his country from 1955-1959 as a member of the United States Air Force. On May 19, 1962 he married the former Doris Riley with whom he shared 52 years as true lifetime companions. Mal was employed by Herkimer County Highway Department for 31years retiring as Stock Keeper and retired in 1991. To know Mal was to appreciate a man who loved and protected his family unconditionally. He was a good husband, a great dad, had a happy marriage with lots of good times and good memories. In his leisure time he enjoyed fishing and hunting and at home was an avid woodworker and gardener. He is survived by his beloved wife, Doris; his son, Donald Rathbun and Cheryl Veith of Ballston Spa; his brothers and sisters, John Rathbun of Ilion, Rod and Sharon Rathbun of North Carolina, Terence Rathbun of Mohawk, Judy and Jim Masten of Gloversville, Betsey and Tony Bender of Schoharie, Rebecca and Bob Bruce, Richard and Heather Rathbun all of Little Falls and Bonnie and Wayne Snell of St. Johnsville. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Gail Domion of Mohawk and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brothers, Thomas F. and Michael Rathbun and a sister, Diane Hughes. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a Memorial Service with the Rev. Jill Farnham-Us officiating on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 West Monroe Street, Little Falls, NY with calling hours beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Gardens, Town of Little Falls with military honors. In lieu of flowers, please remember Mal in a special way and consider donations to Hospice and Palliative Care or the Herkimer County Humane Society; envelopes are available at the Enea Family Funeral Home.
