Obituary of Robert Alan Lumley

Mr. Robert A. Lumley 77 of 27 West Faville Avenue Dolgeville, a retired Vice President of Tricot Manufacturing Company of Dolgeville, died Monday July 7, 2014 at the Mohawk valley Health Care Center in Ilion with the love and support of his family at his side. Bob was born in Passaic, New Jersey on November 8, 1936 the son of the late Jack and Olive (Tingley) Lumley and was a graduate of St. Nicholas elementary school and Pope Pius XII High School both in Passaic, New Jersey. He continued his education by taking courses at Farleigh Dickinson College in accounting, printing and dyeing of fabrics. While a junior in high school Bob joined the United States Naval reserves and served honorably for six years being discharged in September 1959. Upon his discharge from the Navy he then entered the United States Army serving honorably for two years, one being in Korea. He was discharged in August 1961 with the rank of PFC E-3. He earned the following awards while in the Army; Sharpshooters badge AR 30 Cal, Expert rifleman, Good Conduct Medal and the 2d class Gunner (LMG.30). Bob was united in marriage to the former Nancy Walrath in St. Mary's Church Little Falls. Bob joined the Gehring Tricot Company in 1961 in New York City, and in 1962 was made plant manager of the company in the Dolgeville, where he was in charge of the complete factory operations. In 1970 he was promoted to Vice president of Gehring Tricot and Helmont Mills of St. Johnsville. Bob retired from the company in 2008. Bob received many awards while running the Dolgeville and St. Johnsville Plants, including the Herkimer County Chamber of Commerce award for Outstanding service to the people of Herkimer County, the Dr. Jack Epelburg Award for Meritorious Service and Outstanding contributions to the advancement of the Hudson-Mohawk Section of the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists. He also was responsible for overturning several state laws that endangered a number of textile companies, and was awarded the Civic Club award in 1982 for that accomplishment. Bob was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Dolgeville, a member of the Knights of Columbus 4 degree, an avid tennis player and downhill skier, and was a talented artist. He also loved his summer place at Piseco Lake where he pursued his passion for sailing. He was also a member of the Aurora Chapter of the "Alhambra #55 of Patterson, NJ, and a former President of the Herkimer County HARC during the 1970's. In addition Bob also served on the Board of Directors of the Burrows Corporation of Little Falls. He is survived by his wife Nancy, a son and his wife and family Robert and Kathleen Lumley and their children Jack and Kylie of Guilderland, NY , a daughter and her husband and their family Kim and Scott Hecox and their daughters Meghan of Wilmington, NC and Caitlyn of Glenwood Springs, CO., a daughter Stacey Lumley of Little Falls, A Sister in law Eleanor Lumley of New Jersey and a cousin Frances and her husband Herb Restmeyer of Florida, several Nieces and Nephews. He was predeceased by his brother John Lumley. A Mass of Christian Burial and a Celebration of his life will be on Friday July 11, 2014 beginning with his mass at 9AM at St. Joseph's Church North Helmer Avenue Dolgeville. Father Quy N. Vo, Pastor will be the celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Josephs Cemetery with Military Honors.
