Obituary of Frederick B. Hammond

MOHAWK — Frederick B. Hammond, 94, of Henry Street, Mohawk, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 27, 2014, at St. Luke's Hospital in New Hartford. Mr. Hammond born in Ilion on April 9, 1920, the son of Frederick and A. Christine Sorensen Hammond. Working as a paperboy and at other jobs as a youth to help support his family during the Depression, Mr. Hammond graduated from Ilion High School in 1939. A proud member of "the Greatest Generation", Mr. Hammond was a decorated veteran of World War II in the Pacific Theater who served his country with valor and distinction. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1940 to 1945 and was honorably discharged in July 1945 with the rank of Technical Sergeant, returning home to Ilion. Mr. Hammond was awarded the Bronze Star medal for courageous service under fire as an air traffic controller during a May 1943 Japanese bombing raid on Henderson Field, Guadalcanal, playing an important role as U.S. forces successfully repulsed the attack. His WW II tour of duty also included New Caledonia, Australia, New Zealand and Biak Island. Mr. Hammond was employed at Remington Typewriter and Remington Arms. He was a member of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Ilion and a life member of the Ilion Elks since 1950. A hard-working and devoted family man, Mr. Hammond enjoyed fishing, antique restoration, gardening and bowling; he bowled a perfect 300 game at age 66 as a member of a Remington Arms league. Survivors include his son, Mark, of Mohawk; brother, Donald Hammond and his wife, Ella Dyme, of Ilion; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 66 years, Elizabeth Hammond, whom he married on July 31, 1948; brother, Miles Hammond; and three sisters, Margaret Scott, Christine Wilfert and Frances Rowland. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to the charity of your choice. A prayer service will be held at the Mohawk Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
