Obituary of Mary A. Surace

LITTLE FALLS: Mrs. Mary A. Surace, 91, of Little Falls, at one time a Herkimer resident, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, September 4, 2014 at Little Falls Hospital. Mary was born in Little Falls on June 20, 1923, the daughter of the late Joseph and Sarafina (Yanniti) Mastromatteo. She was raised and educated locally and was a graduate of Little Falls High School. On March 17, 1943 she was united in marriage to John P. Surace at St. Joseph's Church in Little Falls; the couple sharing 68years of marriage until his passing on July 31, 2011. Mary held employment with the JC Penney Company in Little Falls. As a loving and very family-oriented wife, mother, and grandmother, she was affectionately thought of by her family as a saint. Mary was a kind, gentle and loving soul who offered her heart and guidance to her loved ones. She loved to cook and enjoyed reading in her spare time. She was a member of the Rock City Senior Citizens, the Rosary Society and was a parishioner of Holy Family Parish. Mary is survived by her sons, Ronald Surace and wife Mary Jane of Surprise, AZ, Craig Surace of Springboro, OH; a daughter, Sandra Surace of Herkimer; her cherished grandchildren, James Surace, Stephanie Surton and husband P.J., Nicholas Surace and a great grandchild, Elijah. She is also survived by a sister, Jane Yaworski of Little Falls; a brother, Frank Mastromatteo and wife LaDonna of Centerville, OH; in-laws, Carmella Klys of Herkimer, Ida and Walter Gronemeyer of Palm Springs, CA, Josephine (Cookie) and John Iocovozzi of Florida, Mary Gigliotti of Herkimer and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a sister, Antoinette (Honey) Murphy. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at 10:30 AM from The Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 West Monroe Street, Little Falls, NY where prayer will be offered and at 11:00 AM from the Holy Family Parish Church, corner of East Main & John Streets, Little Falls, where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father Terence Healy, assisted by Deacon James Bower. Procession will then follow to St. Mary's Cemetery, Town of Herkimer, where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband John. Friends and relatives are invited to attend calling hours at the funeral home on Monday, September 8, 2014 from 5 until 7 PM.
