Obituary of Alfred S. Munger

LITTLE FALLS - The City of Little Falls Fire Chief from 1967 until 1983, Mr. Alfred S. Munger, World War II Veteran, age 95, peacefully passed away on Thursday evening the 11th of September 2014 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, NY. He was constantly surrounded with family love throughout his brief illness. Born in Little Falls, NY (Inghams Mills) on April 3, 1919, Alfred was the son of the late Harvey C. and Adele (Wolf) Munger. He attended and graduated from Little Falls schools. His marriage to the former Lois E. Smith took place on July 8, 1939 in St. Johnsville in a ceremony performed by Rev. Hotchkiss. The couple shared in many happy years together until the passing of Mrs. Munger on October 19, 1986. Alfred served our country in Italy during World War II and was the recipient of a European African Middle Eastern Service Medal along with a Good Conduct Medal. Alfred served the City of Little Falls as a firefighter from 1950 until his retirement in 1983. To this day he is a member of the Herkimer County Volunteer Fireman's Association. Prior to becoming a firefighter, Alfred was employed by the Railway Express. He was a member of the Little Falls American Legion, Kiwanis and the First United Methodist Church of Herkimer/Little Falls. Alfred belonged to the NYS Association of Fire Chiefs and served as a director for many years. He was honored as NYS Fireman of the Year in 2000 receiving numerous commendations and awards. Alfred delivered Meals on Wheels for the Herkimer County Office of the Aging. He was also an active member of the Herkimer County Arson Control Association. First and foremost came Alfred's family. This was clearly evident within the wonderful memoirs that Alfred created of his life and documented for his family which he dedicated to "my wife, Lois, who without her love, sacrifices and support I would never have achieved the goals I set for myself." Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lois, infant son Walter E. Munger in 1942, sons James G. Munger in 2002, Alfred D. (Skip) Munger in 2014 and siblings Conrad and Alice. He is survived by his loving family including children: Patricia E. Foshee and her husband Daniel of Holly Lake Ranch, Texas, Richard H. (Dick) Munger and his wife Sandy of Little Falls, Linda A. Maida and her husband Gregory of Herkimer, his daughter-in-law Jeanne Munger of Little Falls and his grandchildren: Pamela Munger, Jeff Munger, James Foshee, Lori Becker, Donna Erskine, Steven Munger, Ricky Munger, Jennifer Dotterweich, Jill Florian, Gregory Maida III, Kari Szymanski, Julie Swift and Michael Maida; 17 great-grandchildren and many special colleagues and friends. His funeral will be held on Tuesday September 16, 2014 at 10:00 AM from the Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 West Monroe Street, Little Falls, with Rev. Janet Gleason, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Herkimer/Little Falls officiating. Interment with full military honors will take place in the West St. Johnsville Cemetery. Calling hours will be Monday September 15th from 4 until 8 PM at the funeral home. The Little Falls Fire Department will gather at the funeral home at 6 PM Monday evening and the Little Falls American Legion will gather at 6:30 PM. All arrangements are under the direction of Harry J. and Kevin E. Enea, Funeral Directors (315) 823-2424. Alfred's family has expressed a very warm and sincere thank you to the 5th Floor Intensive Care Unit of the Bassett Healthcare Center in Cooperstown whose doctors and nursing staff offered excellent professional care during this difficult time. To remember Alfred in a special way, it is the request of the family that donations in his memory be considered either to the Herkimer County Volunteer Fireman's Association, 120 Newport Road, Utica, NY 13502 or to the First United Methodist Church of Herkimer/Little Falls, 127 North Prospect Street, Herkimer, NY 13350.
