Obituary of Harry H. Lewis

SCHUYLER-HERKIMER - Harry "Hat" H. Lewis, age 93, of Herkimer, formerly of E. Schuyler, passed away on Friday, September 26, 2014, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica. He had been a resident of Folts Home since 2011. He was born on March 11, 1921, in Grandview, Iowa, the son of the late Harry McKinley Lewis and Lennie Howell Lewis. Harry was raised in Salina, Kansas. In November, 1939, at age 18, he enlisted in the US Marines in Denver, CO. He was trained as a sharp-shooter, marksman, truck driver and in heavy artillery. In 1940, he was assigned to the USS Colorado, (the only battleship afloat after Pearl Harbor). Harry participated in action at Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands, Guam, and Marianas Island. He was wounded in action in July of 1944, and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and Purple Heart, and was honorably discharged in November of 1945. Harry was married to Doris Mosseau on October 20, 1945, in San Diego, CA. They made their home in Ilion for many years and then moved to E. Schuyler. Harry joined the Ilion Special Police for a short time, sold Kirby vacuums, worked in Sperry Rand Univac, and retired from MDS in Herkimer. Harry loved to fish, hunt, play golf and bowl for many years. He was also an avid reader. Mr. Lewis was a lifetime member of the Marine Corps League and played cards at the VFW with his buddy Arnie Riggs and friends. He enjoyed watching football and was a Bronco's fan. For years he loved reading Louis L'Amore western novels. Harry was nicknamed "Hat" as he wore a black felt hat for years. He would often greet people with a tip of his hat, and say: "The hat is just an old one, but yet it's kind of rare. He wears the "hat" to hide the fact he hasn't any hair. And when he goes a callen, the "hat" is sure to go, for Harry is my name that everyone should know" Survivors include his wife, Doris Lewis; two daughters, Marsha Madar and her husband, Larry, of Ilion, and Robin Benson and her husband, Paul, of Houston, TX; two sons, Rodney Lewis and his wife, Donna, of Vacaville, CA, and Brett lewis, of Lee Center; a special daughter-in-law, Jaymie Lewis, of Mohawk; eleven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Nancy Stefanec, of Richfield Springs; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Gene Lewis; and his sister, Sue Ann Seng. Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at 1:00 p.m., Friday, October 3, 2014, at the Folts Home Chapel on the second floor, 104 N. Washington St., Herkimer, with Rev. Denise Bowen, Chaplain, officiating. The Marine Corps League will also conduct its service, including Taps. In keeping with Harry's wishes, there are no scheduled calling hours.
