Little Falls/Lemoyne , PA - Maria (Mary) Logar Mills, 91, of Little Falls and formerly of Lemoyne, PA entered into eternal rest on Monday October 6, 2014 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, NY. She had been hospitalized since September 18th (seventeen days at Little Falls Hospital followed by two days at Bassett Medical Center). Mary was born on January 27, 1923 on Danube St. in Little Falls the third of five children born to Thomas and Frances (Hojan) Logar. Mary was educated in Little Falls schools. During the World War II years while her three brothers were serving in the military (two in the Army and one in the Navy), Mary along with her sister Pauline worked at the National Automotive Fiber Company. Mary also worked for the Melrose Shoe Corp. and for one of the local dress factories. From 1944 to 1952, Mary was employed by General Electric in Syracuse, NY. This is where she met her future husband William P. Mills, an Army veteran and Air Traffic Controller. Mary and Bill were married on July 19, 1952 at St. Mary's Church in Little Falls by Rev. Edward H. Gilmour. Their wedding reception was held at the former Slovenian Hall on Danube St. They shared a happy union of 32 years in New Cumberland and Lemoyne, PA until his sudden passing on August 18, 1984. Mary was a loving and devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister and aunt. She enjoyed gardening and sewing as her hobbies. She was a member of St. Theresa's Catholic Church in New Cumberland, PA. In August 2007, Mary moved to Rochester, NY to live near her sister-in-law, Amelia and her niece Christine. Mary lived at Atria Assistive Living for nearly three years and then at the Highlands at Brighton for five months. On October 5, 2010 Mary relocated to her hometown of Little Falls to live at the Alpine Rehab and Nursing Center. Mary is survived by her son William Mills of PA, her niece Christine Logar of Little Falls, nephews Gary Staffo and wife Jocelyn Owens of Springfield, VA, Dr. Donald Staffo and wife Dr. Marilyn Staffo of Tuscaloosa, AL, David Logar of Little Falls, niece Kathleen Logar of Albany, NY, great nieces Allison Perry of Little Falls, Andrea Burns of AL, Deanna Staffo and husband Jesse Turnbull of MD, Kristin Staffo and fiancé Steven Randall of MD, great great -niece Ava Burns of AL, great great-nephew Sebastian Turnbull of MD, and sister-in-law Helyn Logar of Little Falls. Mary was a proud native of Little Falls and even prouder of her humble beginnings as a "Southsider". Mary and her siblings were born in a third floor apartment on Danube St. When she was twelve years old the family moved to another apartment at 147 Southern Ave. affectionately referred to as "the barracks". During the years of the Depression and World War II, the family shared a backyard community garden with their neighbors which helped to sustain them through the year, eating fresh vegetables in the summer, and storing root vegetables in the cellar to get them through the long winter months. Many meals consisted of a bowl of soup. The family persevered without hot running water and without electricity, using kerosene lanterns at night time. Some of Mary's favorite memories include her mother making potica, darning socks and tending the garden, and of her father fashioning a pair of skis for her out of the staves of an old barrel. As a young teenager Mary had a paper route on the Southside which was handed down to her from her older siblings, and in turn, later handed down to her younger siblings. The friends she had as child, Elsie, Helen, Dorothy, the two Mimis, as well as Laura from Syracuse remained her friends throughout her life. Whenever Mary visited Little Falls she would make it a point to gather with her friends for a meal and camaraderie, never forgetting the support they gave her during the early days and tough times. Acts of kindness and generosity were not at all random. They were purposeful, plentiful, commonplace and heartfelt. With gratitude and deep appreciation, this is how Mary related to others throughout her lifetime. Many, many thanks for the outstanding medical care, kindness and compassion given by the Bassett Hospital Staff of Little Falls and Cooperstown, especially to the ER Dept, Dr. Winther, Dr. Freund, Dr. Handy, the Respiratory Therapists, the entire Nursing Staff of the third floor of both hospitals, Dr. Lariscy, Dr. Ahmed. Dr. Ostovar, and the Social Work Dept. A special thanks to Father Terence Healy of Holy Family Parish, and Rev. Betsy Jay of Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown for their prayers and blessings. Arrangements were handled by the Enea Family Funeral home in Little Falls and the Parthemore Funeral Home in New Cumberland, PA. There were no calling hours. Burial took place at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Fairview Township, PA on October 22nd, 2014. Anyone wishing to make a contribution to Mary's memory may donate to Holy Family Parish, 763 Main St., Little Falls, NY 13365.
