Obituary of Fern L. Barr

Mrs. Fern L. Barr, 93, of Little Falls, died peacefully, surrounded by her family, on October 26, 2014. Fern was born in Brooklyn, NY, on July 11, 1921, and spent her childhood between Babylon and Oak Beach on Long Island. She was united in marriage to James K. Barr on January 28, 1940, with whom she shared a blessed union for 60 years until his passing in 2000. Fern was a caregiver from her earliest years, and she took great pride in achieving her LPN after attending nursing school alongside her daughter Anne, and graduating at the top of her class. She retired from Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, NY, following a nursing career of more than 25 years. Fern's lifelong strength and determination saw her through numerous difficulties, and her sense of humor endeared her to those she met. Fern is survived by three daughters, Anne (John) Oliver, of Redondo Beach, CA, Margaret (Andrew) Goldman, of Little Falls, Beth Yocum, of Manhattan Beach, CA; three sons, Patrick (Tina) Barr of Monticello, UT, Michael Barr of New Port Richey, FL, Bradley (Karen) Barr of Middletown, NY; 11 grandchildren, Patrick, Steven, Gregory, and Kelly Barr, Dwayne and Daisha Barr, Bethany, Annelise, and Andrew Goldman, and Donald and Laura Yocum; and 9 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her brother, Rodney DeMurias, of Williston, FL, whose weekly phone calls brought her great joy and whose surprise visit for her 90th birthday was the highlight of the celebration. She was predeceased by a daughter and son-in-law, Cassandra and Robert Lane, and son-in-law Lewis Yocum. Calling hours will be at the Enea Funeral Home, 24 W. Monroe St., Little Falls, 5-7 p.m., on Tuesday, October 28, 2014. Family will be present to visit with friends and share fond memories about Fern. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday October 29th, 2014 at 10:30 AM at the funeral home chapel where prayer will be offered followed by A Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM at Holy Family Parish Church, corner of East Main & John Streets, with Rev. Terence Healy presiding. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Bay Shore, Long Island. The family extends sincere thanks to all the in-home caregivers over the years whose care, companionship and nightly Yahtzee games filled Fern's hours with happiness. Special thanks to Alisha LaQuee for caring not only for Fern, but for Fern's garden, which was the source of great joy, and to Nellie Chadeayne, whose ever present smile and sense of humor brightened Fern's nights. Heartfelt thanks to Janet Dodson, who provided loving care not only to Fern but previously to Fern's husband, both of whom loved Janet like a granddaughter. Over the past ten years Janet's devotion to Fern, their trips to the park, drives through the countryside, stops for ice cream, and summers on the porch blessed Fern's life in a way that the family will always cherish. Fern's funeral arrangements are under the direction of Harry J. and Kevin E. Enea, Funeral Directors. (315) 823-2424. To share an online note of sympathy, please go to: www.eneafamily.com
