Obituary of Joseph Gaetano

Mr. Joseph A. Gaetano Jr., a retired local barber, of 30 Spofford Square Dolgeville, died unexpectedly Tuesday November 4th, 2014 at his residence of natural causes. Joe was born in Utica the son of Joseph A. and Gregoria (Gerchiaro) Gaetano and was a graduate of Utica Free Academy. He was first employed by the CC Camp in Booneville from 1937-40 and moved to Dolgeville in 1941 where he worked for the Eastern Footwear Company. Joe enlisted in the United States Navy in June of 1944 and served honorably until his discharge in February 1946. He received the following service medals, Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal. Upon discharge Joe returned to Dolgeville where he began his own barber business and continued throughout the many years until retiring unofficially years ago. His business Joe's Barber Shop was a fixture on Main Street in Dolgeville for many years. Joe was twice married, first to Ellen Crandall and upon her death he married Helen Fredericks on April 26, 1970 in Booneville. She predeceased him on April 29, 2009. He was a member of the former Italian Club of Dolgeville, and the DAV. He also enjoyed fishing. His passion was cooking and will long be remembered for his "Meatballs & Pizza". He is survived by a granddaughter Lisa Lamphere and her husband Gary Jr. and their son Daniel , his Nephews & Nieces-Ronald (Diane) Gaetano, Thomas (Karen) Marrotta, Frank (Roberta) Marrotta, Don (Elaine) Johnson, Dorothy DeCarr, Robert (Palma), Nole and Arthur Nole, several Great nephews and Nieces, and Special Friends Ted and Jeanine Kawryga. Friends may call on Thursday November 6th, 2014 from 4-6 PM at the Roberts & Enea Funeral Home 3 Faville Avenue Dolgeville. Entombment will take place Friday at 10:30 at Calvary Cemetery, Utica. Prayers will be offered at 6pm by Deacon Peter Mano of St. Joseph's Church.
