Mr. Louis T. Pohleven Jr. 81 of 11 Schuyler Street Dolgeville, died Saturday evening December 20th, 2014 at the Alpine Nursing Home in Little Falls. At the time of his passing he was comforted with the love and support of his family. Louie was born in the town of Jacksonburg, on January 24, 1933 the son of the late Louis T. and Loretta (Congdon) Pohleven. He was a graduate of Little Falls High School where he lettered in baseball, basketball and football. After graduating he was also a member of the men's varsity basketball team, along with playing baseball on the Independent Men's League and also played semi-pro football for the Little Falls Team. A veteran of the United States Army he served honorably in the Korean War from March 1951 until his discharge as a Corporal in February 1954. He served with the 1603 battery B 24th AAA GN BN. His awards included the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze stars, United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. While in the service he played basketball in both Korea and Alabama, and baseball at Ft. Dix, New Jersey. Upon returning from the service he went to work for the former New York Telephone Company now known as Verizon, as a splicer. He was employed by them for over 32 years retiring from there in 1987. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth "Betty" Alling on April 14th, 1984 in Little Falls, New York. A civic minded man and athlete he devoted himself to the community by coaching Little League baseball, Pop Warner football and varsity basket ball for St. Mary's School in Little Falls. His affiliations included membership in the following organizations- the Pioneer Club of the Telephone Company, Little Falls Elks Lodge #42, Charter Member and Past President of the former Dolgeville Lions Club, Regional Diabetes Chairman, member and Past Commander of the American Legion of Little Falls, member and 1st Vice Commander of the Veterans of Foreign War of Herkimer, the Korean War Veterans Association, , Past commander of the DAV of Herkimer, the Dolgeville Masonic Lodge, and served as Patron of the Auskerada Chapter Order of Eastern Star, also served as President and Charter member of the Home School of St. Mary's, and President of the Varsity Club, a member of the Monday morning Men's Golf League at Little Falls Municipal Golf course. Louie also enjoyed participating in the yearly Minstrel shows put on by the Lion's club and portrayed Henry Brockett in the Chapters of Alfred Dolge's Life put on by the Violet Festival. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth of 30 years, his family Mark (Joanne) Pohleven, of Little Falls, Michael (Margie) Pohleven of Spencerport, NY, LuAnn (Rick) Novak , Lori (Calvin) Richards both of Little Falls, Terry (Michelle Comstock of Dolgeville, Lynne (Rodney) Randall of Stratford, Tammy (Ken) Hoke of Dolgeville, 20 Grandchildren, 16 Great Grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister Rosemary Miller a special brother in law George Miller and Louise Pohleven mother of his children. Funeral services will be held Saturday December 27th, 2014 at 11 AM at the Dolgeville United Methodist Church on Helmer Avenue Dolgeville. Rev. jack Ford, Pastor will officiate. Burial will be in the Spring in the Dolgeville Cemetery. Services will begin with the Order of Eastern Star and the Dolgeville Masonic Lodge holding ritualistic services. After the memorial service members of the VFW will hold a service and it will conclude with Military Honors. The family will greet friends at the services on Saturday morning. Because of the Christmas Holiday in lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to the S & S Ambulance Corps 75 North Helmer Avenue Dolgeville or your local Volunteer Fire Department in his memory.
