Obituary of Alfred H. Elthorp

HERKIMER - Mr. Alfred H. "Al" Elthorp, age 75, a lifelong Mohawk Valley resident, passed away on Thursday, January 1, 2015, at Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family. Al was born on November 7, 1939, in Mohawk, the son of the late Robert and Gertrude (Mosher) Elthorp. Raised locally, he was a graduate of Mohawk High School with the Class of 1958. Upon completion of his schooling, Alfred enlisted with the United States Air Force and proudly served his nation. At one time, Alfred was married to the former Barbara Armstrong, a relationship from which came his four children. A hardworking and dedicated provider, Al worked for many years at the Remington Arms Company as a forklift operator, a position from which he retired. Al was a lifelong member of the American Legion and was of the Methodist faith. Al's sense of humor and the endless laughter that he brought to others will be missed by many, including his daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah Kimball and her husband, George, and Sheryl McCumber and her husband, Stephen, all of Frankfort; his sons, Russell Elthorp, Sr., and Dana Ruiz of Brookfield and Kevin Elthorp and Trista Jenison of Stratford; his eleven grandchildren, Joshua, Ryan, Russell, Jr., Jessica, Perry, Jaimie, Demetrius, Sawyer, Dominique, Kaylih and Austin; and four great-grandchildren, Nathan, Jocelyn, Lorenzo and Autumn. He also leaves his sisters and brother-in-law, Mary Edwards of Herkimer and Roberta Holmes and her husband, Hollis, of Florida; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Dick Elthorp and his wife, Gerry, of Frankfort, Don Elthorp and his wife, Carol, and Bill Elthorp and his wife, Carolyn, all of Mohawk; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, Al was predeceased by two brothers, Chuck Elthorp and George Elthorp, and two sisters, Betty Jean White and Herriette Feldbrugge. Funeral services will be held 6:00 p.m., Monday, January 5, 2015, at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home's larger facility located at 4309 Acme Rd. (old Main St. between Ilion and Frankfort). Calling hours are Monday, January 5, 2015, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. prior to the funeral home service at 4309 Acme Rd. (old Main St.). Al will be laid to rest in the spring in Exeter Center Cemetery. Al's family wishes to thank the nursing staff of Bassett Healthcare's Intensive Care Unit for the exceptional care shown to them and their father.
