Obituary of Donald C Sawyer

MOHAWK - Donald C. Sawyer, Sr., age 91, formerly of Creek Rd., State Route 168, Mohawk, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 27, 2015, at the Alpine Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Little Falls. He was born on May 2, 1923, in Truxton, NY, the son of George and Gail (Truman) Sawyer, and graduated from Norwich High School. Don was a veteran of WW II, serving in the US Army. On October 25, 1947, he was married to Barbara Cockett, in Mohawk. She died on February 8, 1979. Mr. Sawyer was employed in Support Services at UNISYS, in Ilion and Elk Grove, IL, for thirty-two years. He later was employed at MDS in Herkimer, retiring in 1987. Don was a member of the Winfield Masonic Lodge #581, and was a 32nd. Degree Mason and past Master of the Mohawk Masonic Lodge. He was past Grand Stewart of the NYS Masonic Lodge and a member of the Ziyara Shriners of Utica. Mr. Sawyer transported children to Shriner's Hospitals in Boston, MA, and Springfield, MA. Don was a member of the Mohawk American Legion Post 25 and a life member of the Universal Craftsmen Council of Engineers # 20. He loved to fish along the West Canada Creek and enjoyed a special fishing trip into Canada. Mr. Sawyer helped his son build a family camp at Kayuta Lake. He enjoyed playing cards with fellow Shriners on Mondays. Don also enjoyed the veterans trips to Washington. Mr. Sawyer has traveled all over the world. He was an avid gardener (vegetables and flowers). Surviving family members include his devoted son and daughter-in-law, Donald C. Sawyer, Jr., and Joyce, of Mohawk; two grandchildren, Kimberly Sawyer and Stephine Wheeler and her husband, Isaac, all of Mohawk; twin great-grandsons, Evan and Zachary Wheeler, of Mohawk; two stepbrothers, Rev. Samuel Sawyer and his wife, Gail, of Albuquerque, NM, and David Sawyer and his wife, Charlotte, of PA; three stepsisters, Nancy Devine, of Conklin, NY, Peg Williams and her husband, Brian, of Wilmington, NC, and Judy Enman and her husband, Mark, of Winston Salem, NC; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his sisters, Virginia Cook and Genevieve Staley, and his stepsister, Karen Sawyer. Funeral services will be held 6:00 p.m., Friday, January 30, 2015, at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home's newly reopened home at 102 West St., Ilion, with Rev. Brian Engel, Pastor of the Mohawk Reformed Church, officiating. Spring interment will be held at Mohawk Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Friday, January 30, 2015, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home at 102 West St., Ilion. The Winfield Masonic Lodge #581 service will be held Friday at 5:30 p.m., prior to the funeral home service. A special thank you to Dr. V. Sharma, Dr. A.
