Obituary of Marian L. Settle
ST. JOHNSVILLE - Mrs. Marian L. Settle, age 93, of St. Johnsville, entered into the arms of the Lord on Wednesday February 4, 2015 at the St. Johnsville Rehabilitation & Nursing Center. Marian was constantly blessed with the support of her loving family. She received wonderful care from the dedicated nursing home staff and from Mountain Valley Hospice as well.
The daughter of the late Roland and Elodie (VanMeir) Hood, she was born October 6, 1921 in Newark, NY. In 1939, Marian was the valedictorian of the Lyons High School, Class of 1939. She was a very accomplished woman of her era having graduated from the University of Rochester, particularly the Eastman School of Music in 1943, where she received her teaching certification and a Bachelor's Degree with a major in music. She performed in the USO (Rochester branch) for United States soldiers during World War II.
After graduating, she met her Sweetheart, Harold J. Settle, and the couple wed on May 25, 1945 in Lyons, NY. They shared in a blessed union of nearly 61 years until the passing of Harold on February 24, 2006. Harold and Marian owned and operated the Settle farm in St. Johnsville for many years, which is now owned and operated by their son Michael and his wife Lorinda.
Known for her beautiful soprano singing voice, Marian performed at many weddings and events throughout the Mohawk Valley area. She was an accompanist with All - County and All - State musical performances. Marian just loved children and she possessed a contagious smile and an entertaining sense of humor. Christmas was such a special time for her. The activity of taking children caroling about the town to shut - in's and community members was such a wonderful time. It was even to be known to be followed by 'hot chocolate for all!' At the family Christmas party she loved to prepare the food. In fact, much of the food she prepared through her joy of cooking was grown in the family garden. She loved to be around water, from creeks to lakes (she was near Lake Ontario) to the ocean. She found peace at the water.
Marian shared her musical teaching talents in school districts in Schoharie, Little Falls, and St. Johnsville (where she had started). She last worked within the Canajoharie school district as the Elementary Vocal teacher. Throughout her life she maintained a sweet and simple demeanor that won the trust and hearts of many, who even now are being changed by her witness of constant nurturing and love.
A woman of faith, Marian shaped her family spirituality by her tireless Christian example, and also through various prayer groups and activities. For over 50 years she was the church organist and choir director at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in St. Johnsville. She was also a member of the Bethesda Fellowship of St. Johnsville. She was very active in the church and community, and was a 4-H leader at one time in the St. Johnsville area. She directed and coordinated two musicals, "Tell It Like It Is," and "Natural High."
With family as her foremost priority, Marian proved herself a loving and caring wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved to travel throughout the country with Harold. The major loves of her life were family, friends, faith, and all the children whose lives she touched.
Survivors include her children, daughter Crystal Hamelink and her husband Drew of Ballston Lake, NY, three sons, Peter J. Settle and his wife Francoise of Saratoga Springs, Thomas M. Settle and his wife Beverly of Madison, NY, and Michael C.
