Obituary of Gordon W. Davis

ST. JOHNSVILLE - Mr. Gordon W. Davis, age 95, a longtime resident of St. Johnsville, NY and World War II Veteran, passed away with his loving family at his side on Monday, February 23, 2015 at the Batavia VA Medical Center, Batavia, NY. He was born on April 24th, 1919 in Dolgeville, NY, a son of the late Walter and Elizabeth (Sleezer) Davis and was a graduate of St. Johnsville High School. Gordon went on to serve our country during World War II in the United States Army. He enlisted on July 16th, 1941. His service time awarded him decorations and citations such as the American Defense Service Medal, the Asiatic - Pacific Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Philippines Liberation Service Medal. His honorable discharge was awarded October 21st, 1945. Gordon was united in marriage to Kathleen R. Corte on April 20th, 1946 at St. John's Reformed Church in St. Johnsville. The couple shared in over 51 wonderful years together until the passing of Mrs. Davis on December 24th, 1997. Gordon was well - known in the St. Johnsville community and served throughout the years as a member of the fire department, a member of the Masonic Lodge, and a member of the American Legion. He had worked as a bridge carpenter in the construction industry with S.J. Groves and Sons Co. of Minneapolis, MN. Gordon's family felt blessed to have him as a part of their lives as a teacher, a gardener, a hunter, a trapper and a veteran. His nephew Chris remembers his as the man who remembered every birthday and names spanning 90 plus years, as well as the man who worked his garden with dedication and love. A man they respected and loved. A man who's knowledge of everything always impressed and taught a lot. A man who had a way of taking little jobs, like changing a battery, or hooking up a telephone. He will be dearly missed. Survivors include his son Bill Davis of LeRoy, NY, his sister, Caroline Hayes of St. Johnsville, grandchildren, William G. Davis and his wife Kelly of Conesus Lake, NY, Robert Davis and his wife Jeannine of LeRoy, NY, and Brian Davis and his wife Nicole of Mount Morris, NY, nine great - grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Kathleen, and his daughter Janis Starr and brothers Walter "Buzz" Davis of St. Johnsville and Herbert Davis of Johnstown and two sisters Isabelle Marino of St. Johnsville and Margaret Hastings of St. Johnsville and several In - Laws. Funeral services will be held on Saturday MARCH 7th, 2015 at 2:00 PM at The Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center Street in St. Johnsville, NY with The Reverend David A. Johnson officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to a calling hour one hour prior to the service time at the funeral home (Saturday 1 until 2PM). On Saturday afternoon at 1:45 PM the St. Johnsville Masonic Lodge #611 will hold ritual at the funeral home for Brother Gordon, an over 66 year member of the lodge. Following this service prayer with Rev. Johnson will begin. At the conclusion of the prayer service, a final tribute will be paid to Gordon by his follow comrades from the Morris J. Edwards Post #168, Saint Johnsville American Legion. Following the American Legion, members of the St. Johnsville Fire Department will perform a full dress walk through to pay tribute. There will also be a presentation of the flag by members of the United States Army to conclude the afternoon. The family then invites all to the HC Smith Benefit Club, St. Johnsville.
