Obituary of Bernard R. Brandow

ST. JOHNSVILLE - Mr. Bernard R. "Bernie" Brandow, age 80, the Harbormaster of the Village of St. Johnsville Marina, and longtime St. Johnsville resident, passed away at his home on Thursday morning February 26th, 2015. He was surrounded by his loving family and his peaceful passing occurred after a brief illness. He served our country during the Korean War, US ARMY, 101st Airborne Division. He was born on June 4th, 1934 in St. Johnsville, a son of the late John and Belle (Ackerson) Brandow. He attended St. Johnsville schools. His marriage to the former Marguerite Koelbl took place July 5th, 1986 in Fort Plain. Bernie served as a member and retired from the St. Johnsville Police Department as well as the Fire Department, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge (ten years). He was also a lifetime member of the Oppenheim Trail Blazer Club. Bernie served an important role as dock master at the St. Johnsville Marina. This position was so very dear to his heart. In the year 2000 he constructed the beautiful lighthouse that stands there and is admired to this day. He is survived by his beloved family, his wife of over 28 years, Maggie, his children, Loring "Bear" Brandow of Caroga Lake, Larry Brandow and his wife Crystal of Dolgeville, Lance Brandow and his wife Jennifer of Dolgeville, and Link Brandow and his wife Tara of Stratford, his step - children, Tama Rush of Gloversville, Troy Rush of Gloversville, Todd Rush and his wife Christine of Canajoharie and Louis Rush and his fiancée Julie of Fort Plain, his grandchildren, Sara Rose, Kelsey, Janelle, Michaela, Allyson, Kaitlyn, Richard, Taylor, Kaylee, Scott, Shannen, Carri, Tyler, Daryl, Dalton, Becca, Kaitlyn, and Cory, his sister - in - law, Mary Buchsbaum (Brandow), and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother, John Brandow "Proctor," and his sister Mary Lou Karpik (Brandow). Funeral services will be held on Monday MARCH 2, 2015 at 11:00 AM in The Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center Street in St. Johnsville, NY with Father Dennis Murphy, Pastor of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church of Fort Plain, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to attend calling hours on Sunday, MARCH 1st, from 3 until 6 PM at the funeral home. The following organizations are respectfully asked to attend at the following times, at Sunday's calling hours the Morris J. Edwards Post #168, Saint Johnsville American Legion (6:00PM), members of the St. Johnsville Fire Department will perform a full dress walk through to pay tribute (5:30 PM) and a tribute from the St. Johnsville Police Department (5:15 PM). On MONDAY morning the St. Johnsville Masonic Lodge #611 will hold ritual at the funeral home (11:20 AM) There will also be a presentation of the flag by members of the United States Army on Monday morning. The family then invites all to the St. Johnsville Masonic Lodge after the Monday funeral service. It is the wish of the family that contributions in memory of Bernie be considered to a fund to be established to build a new lighthouse at the marina. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home for this purpose. A very special thank you is extended to the Mountain Valley Hospice for the care and compassion extended during this difficult time.
