Obituary of Ronald J. Jones

DOLGEVILLE - Mr. Ronald J. Jones, a well - known and respected resident of Dolgeville, NY and World War II Veteran, died unexpectedly Sunday, March 8, 2015, at his residence, of natural causes. He was born in Abertillery, South Wales (United Kingdom) on January 22, 1921 the son of T. George and Beatrice (Watkins) Jones and was a graduate of Dolgeville High School class of 1939. His marriage to Arlene M. (Spingler) took place on April 30, 1942 in Dolgeville. They celebrated 70 years of marriage together. Arlene passed away November 23, 2012. His service to our country began in 1942 with the United States Air Force and served the Pacific front during World War II. This was a part of the 'Greatest Generation.' He was a B-29 Radar Operator over Tokyo and was issued a Distinguished Flying Cross while in service. His honorable discharge was issued in 1945. Mr. Jones was employed by the Dolgeville Central School in the Bus Garage as a mechanic and was also a bus - driver. He was of the Presbyterian faith, an over 61 year member of the Dolgeville Masonic Lodge #796, and his personal interests included crossword puzzles, golf, horseracing, and the New York Yankees. Back in the day he played on a local basketball team known as the 'Dainty Maids.' He also enjoyed many a Friday night with his buddies on trips to Vernon Downs. Affectionately remembered as 'Jonesy,' Ron, along with his father were the owners and operators of Jones Texaco Station on South Main Street in Dolgeville. Upon the passing of his father he became the sole owner for many years. He is survived by a son and his wife, Ronald (Tom) & Elaine Jones of Hammondsport, NY, a daughter and her husband Cheryl & Charles Brockett of Dolgeville, his adored grandchildren, Dr's Chris & Leisa Brockett of Saratoga, Scott Brockett of PA, Amy & Steve Billings of Dolgeville, Thomas & Laura Jones of Webster, NY, and Michelle & Mark Hatfield of Holly, NY, his great - grandchildren, Joshua Hatfield, Megan Hatfield, Sean Jones, Rachel Jones, Megan Brockett, Alex Brockett, and Ainsley Billings and nieces and nephews including Gary Luther & wife Elaine and Gail Mastromoro and husband Norman. He was predeceased by his sister Muriel Luther and her husband Assemblyman Harold C. Luther. Funeral services will be held Saturday March 14, 2015 at 4 PM at the Roberts & Enea Funeral Home 3 Faville Avenue Dolgeville. The Rev. Gertrude Ortlieb will officiate. Burial will be in the spring at Salisbury Rural Cemetery. Calling hours are SATURDAY afternoon from 2:00 PM until the time of the services. Memorials may be made to the Herkimer County Humane Society, P.O. Box 73, Mohawk, NY 13407 in his name. Envelopes will be available at the services. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Brian A.
