ILION - Kathleen "Kay" Denison Gage, of Tucker Ave., Ilion, passed away peacefully on St. Patrick's Day. She was born in Ilion, the daughter of John J. and Anne (King) Sweeney. Kay graduated from Annunciation School, Ilion High School and St. Peter's Hospital School of Nursing in Albany. In 1958, she was married to Rockwell "Rocky" Denison in Utica. He died in 1980. At one time, she was married to James Toher, who died in 1993. Kay later married Gerald "Jerry" Gage in 1996. He died in September 2012. She was a charge nurse (R.N.) at Memorial Division of St. Luke's, Utica. Later Kay became office manager-R.N. for Dr. Robert Dennis, M.D., for over seventeen years. Most recently, she was head nurse and supervisor at Folts Home, Herkimer, for fifteen years, retiring in 1996. Mrs. Gage was a member of the Church of the Annunciation, Catholic Daughters Court St. Bridget #265 and St. Peter's Hospital Alumni. She was a past member of the K of C Auxiliary, American Nursing Assoc. and MVGH Guild. Surviving family members include her sister, Marie D. Hameister, of Cooperstown; her brother, Loren "Lanny" Sweeney, of Ilion; twenty-two nieces and nephews who played an important part in her life, especially Christine Jones and her husband, Dennis, and John Wright and his wife, Heidi; several great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews; several cousins, including a special cousin, Shirley Sweeney and family; two stepdaughters, Lorie Richards and her husband, Thomas, of Utah, and Theresa Gage, of California; two step-grandchildren, Alia and Ian Richards; and her sister-in-law, Charlotte (Sweeney) Cuda, of Ilion. She was predeceased by her brothers, John and Robert Sweeney; her sisters, Lucille Mathews and Bernice Wright; and her sister-in-law, Arletta Sweeney. Funeral services will be held 9:30 a.m., Monday, March 23, 2015, at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home's newly reopened home at 102 West St., Ilion, and 10:30 a.m. at the Church of the Annunciation, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Paul Catena, Pastor. Members of Catholic Daughters Court St. Bridget #265 will act as Honor Guard at the church. Spring interment will be at Armory Hill Cemetery, Ilion. Calling hours are Sunday, March 22, 2015, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home at 102 West St., Ilion.
