Obituary of Shirley Spanfelner

HERKIMER: Mrs. Shirley Spanfelner, a longtime Herkimer resident, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at the Presbyterian Home for CNY, New Hartford with the love and support of her family by her side. Born in Tupper Lake, NY on October 19, 1930, Shirley was the daughter of the late Harry R. and Rita (LaVine) Moose. Raised and educated locally, she was a Herkimer High School graduate and often reminisced her role as a drum majorette. On May 19, 1951 she was married to Merrill Spanfelner at St. Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer, by Rev. Anthony Crucetti; a 63 year union built on love, support and mutual respect. Shirley's greatest joy was caring for her family and her home. Her husband, children and grandchildren were the center of her heart and they motivated her soul. In her earlier years she enjoyed being at the family camp on 7th Lake boating and water skiing. Summertime fun around the pool with her family was special. Her artistic talents were displayed through her flair for interior decorating, gardening and landscaping at her home. At one time she was a volunteer at Herkimer Hospital and a former member of the Columbiettes. Shirley enjoyed antiques and formerly owned and operated The New & Old Trading Post. She was a part-time certified nurse aid at The Folts Home in Herkimer. She is survived by her husband, Merrill; her children and significant others, Deborah Sykes (Tito Ruiz) of Marcy, Gary Spanfelner (Patricia DeCarr) of Herkimer and Rebecca Spanfelner (Scott Prenoveau) of Plattsburgh; her cherished grandchildren, Tricia DeCarr, Mary, Heather and Samantha Spanfelner all of Herkimer; great-grandsons, James and Leonardo; in-laws James and Joseph Spanfelner and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her sister, Beverly Russell. While at the Presbyterian Home she enjoyed meeting other residents and their families. Shirley's family would like to acknowledge and thank the Presbyterian Staff, noting Pam LaPolla, Director of Social Services; Lucy Viti, Director of Nursing and the Activities Department for the kindness, care and compassion given to Shirley during her time spent there. Family and friends may pay their respects on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 from 4:00-7:00 PM at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd., Ilion, NY (Town of Frankfort) 315-894-8000. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at 1:30 PM at the funeral home with The Very Reverend Mark Cunningham, officiating. Interment will take place at a later date at Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer. Those wishing to express an act of kindness may make a donation in Shirley's memory to the Activities Department at the Presbyterian Home or Hospice & Palliative Care of CNY; envelopes will be available at the funeral home. The family is being cared for by Harry J. and Kevin E. Enea, Funeral Directors. To add to Shirley's online condolences, please visit www.eneafamily.com. We love you Mom.
