Obituary of George F. Barnes

ILION: George F. Barnes, Sr., 83, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 27, 2015 at Valley Health Services with the love and support of his family by his side. Born in Ballston Spa, NY on August 22, 1931, George was the son of the late Geoffrey and Evelyn (Morrison) Barnes. He was a graduate of Ballston Spa High School and honorably served his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force, serving from 1950-1953. On July 17, 1955 he married the former Betty Jean Hayes, sharing a great devotion and true love during their partnership of 59 years. During his working life, George was employed as a salesman for AVI of Glens Falls, NY and also worked at one time for Metropolitan Insurance as a sales representative. George held close to his heart the love he had for his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed singing and possessed a pleasant sense of humor and demonstrated generosity to his family, friends, neighbors, and even strangers - never expecting anything in return; a doer for everyone else. All would say, "He was the nicest man I ever met"; he will be sadly missed. He was a member of the Gideons, the Saratoga County prison ministry, Town Clerk for the Town of Milton, NY, ministered at the local nursing home faithfully, and was a lifelong member of the Ballston Spa Alliance Church. He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty; his children; George Barnes, Jr. of Ohio, Gary Barnes and wife Kathy of Amsterdam, Jo-Anne Murphy and husband Kevin of Ilion; his cherished grandchildren, Christopher and Nicole Barnes; great-grandchildren, Siara, Paloma and Joanne; his sisters, Marion Watson of Northville, NY, Terrill Curran and husband Andrew of Oswego, Valerie Dechene and husband Mark of Clifton Park and Elaine Curcio and husband Sam of Ballston Spa. He also leaves many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Geoffrey Barnes, a sister, Barbara Sharpe and a granddaughter, Elisha Barnes. George's funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, Ilion, NY (Town of Frankfort) 315-894-8000. His memorial funeral service will take place on Monday afternoon at 12:30 PM at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY 12871 with full military honors. Family and friends are welcome to gather at 2 PM at the Ballston Spa Alliance Church following services at the National Cemetery. The family would like to thank Valley Health Services, Little Falls Hospital and Basset Hospital for their care and support. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the National Alzheimer's Association. The family is being cared for by Harry J. and Kevin E. Enea, Funeral Directors.
