Obituary of Edwin J. Vogt

LITTLE FALLS - Mr. Edwin J. Vogt, age 78, a longtime resident of Little Falls, NY passed away with his loving family at his side on Monday evening May 25, 2015 in the comfort of his home. He was born on September 16, 1936 in Little Falls, a son of the late Carl Otto and Irene (Giachetti) Vogt. He graduated from LaSalle School of Albany, NY and also attended Herkimer County Community College as well as Empire State College. Ed served our country with the United States Marine Corps from 1955 until 1958 having been stationed in Hawaii with the Amphibian Tractor Battalion. Upon honorable discharge he held the rank of Lance Corporal. His marriage to the former Joan Vail took place January 21, 1961 at St. Mary's Church in Little Falls. Ed just loved the City of Little Falls. His working career revolved around the city, as owner of Vogt's Contracting, where he operated as a self - employed paint contractor. Ed was extremely civic minded and knowledgeable in history, and was involved with the erecting of and restoration of many memorials throughout the City. He was the City Historian for over 40 years, having been recently honored for this accomplishment. He served one term as a Herkimer County Legislator, and was a member of the Little Falls as well as New York State Historical Societies. Ed was a very articulate poetry writer, and was a publisher as well. He is survived by his beloved wife, Joan, of 54 years, his children, Thomas R. Vogt and his wife Lynne of Manchester, New Hampshire, John K. Vogt and his wife Cindy of Little Falls, Kathleen A. O'Neill and her husband Dennis of Schoharie, and Patricia E. Sklarz and her husband Edward of Little Falls, his grandchildren, Jessica Sklarz Covey and her husband Jason, Alicia Sklarz, Paige Vogt, Cameron Vogt, and Christopher O'Neill, a great - granddaughter, Jenna Covey, his sisters, Louise Conkling, Marion Bocon, Violet Morgan, and Agnes Miller, many nieces, nephews and cousins and In - Laws, Maurice Vail and his wife Mary of Bay Village, Ohio, Rev. Thomas J. Vail of Little Falls, Sr. Kathleen Thomas Vail, CSJ., of Latham, Kathleen and William Gressler, and Elizabeth Vogt. He was predeceased by his brothers, John Vogt, Joseph Vogt and David Vogt. His family has planned all funeral and burial arrangements with The Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 West Monroe Street in Little Falls, NY. Harry J. & Kevin E. Enea, Funeral Directors (315) 823-2424. Funeral services will be held on Thursday May 28, 2015 at 10:30 AM at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 West Monroe Street in Little Falls and at 11:00 AM at the Holy Family Parish Church corner of East Main & John Streets in Little Falls where a mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Terence Healy, Pastor, assisted by Deacon James Bower. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Town of Herkimer with full military honors. Calling hours at the funeral home will be on Wednesday May 27, from 4 until 8 PM. The Little Falls City Officials will gather in a body at 4 PM to pay their respects.
