Obituary of Robert A. Handy

ST. JOHNSVILLE - Mr. Robert A. "Bob" Handy, age 92, a longtime resident of State Highway 5 S (Fort Plain), passed away on Monday morning, June 15, 2015 in the comforting care of Mountain Valley Hospice, Gloversville, NY. He was born on March 20, 1923 in Ephratah, and he was the son of the late Earl O. and Lottie (Leabenswarth) Handy. He attended Johnstown schools. On March 30, 1968 he was united in marriage with Anna Mae Heiser, a loving union of 42 years until the passing of Mrs. Handy on January 14, 2010. Bob proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Navy. He was the recipient of several distinguished honors and citations, and it was known that his ship went down and he and his fellow crew-mates spent several days at sea. He worked at Lenz Hardware formerly on Bridge Street in St. Johnsville for 26 years specifically as a plumber. Survivors include his daughter, Carol Ann (Caprara) Lawson of South New Berlin, NY, two good friends whom Bob considered his family, Judy Swartz of St. Johnsville and Loren Hazelett of Fort Plain, and a daughter, Diane Nelson of Middleburg, Florida. He is also survived by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and a special nephew Bill Marosek and wife Thelma. We would also like to acknowledge Bob's very special Amish friends that live in our area, Joe and Sarah Yoder, and Mosie and Bena Mast and their families, as well as Bob's Navy Buddy, Russ Hadley of Beverly, Massachusetts. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife, Anna Mae, a daughter, Donna Grose, and son-in-law, David Lawson. His family has planned all arrangements with The Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center Street in St. Johnsville, NY. Funeral Directors Harry J. & Kevin E. Enea (518) 568-2300. Calling hours at the funeral home will be held on Monday, June 29, 2015 from 1 until 2 PM. There will be a prayer service at the conclusion of calling hours (2 PM) at the funeral home chapel with Rev. R.W. Williams officiating. The family will then hold a burial service next to his wife Anna Mae at the West St. Johnsville Cemetery. Those wishing to remember Bob in a special way are asked to consider donations to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Avenue, Gloversville, NY 12078 .
