Obituary of Irene E. Gaines

FORT PLAIN - Irene E. Gaines, of Main Street in Fort Plain, NY, passed away peacefully on Sunday evening July 12, 2015 at the St. Johnsville Nursing & Rehabilitation Center with her loving family there. Mrs. Gaines was 82. Her passing occurred suddenly. Her arrangements have been entrusted to and preplanned with The Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center Street in St. Johnsville, NY. (518) 568-2300. Funeral Directors Harry J. & Kevin E. Enea. Memorial calling hours will be on Wednesday July 22, 2015 from 2 o'clock until 4 o'clock PM at the funeral home. Funeral prayers will begin at 4 PM in the chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Kenneth Dingman officiating. Final committal to take place in Nebraska. Irene was a widow to Frank H. Gaines. Born in Palatine, NY August 28, 1932 to parents the late Irvin and Rose (Dingman) Surnear. She is the mother of Zora Bateholts and her husband Donald of Fort Plain, and Frank L. Gaines of Fonda; she is the sister of Clarence Harwick and his wife Kathy of Indian Castle, NY. Irene held neighbors Ed & Judy Aker close to her as extended family like a son and daughter. She also leaves grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by several brothers and a sister. She enjoyed BINGO, ceramics, crocheting, and the casino. We all fondly recall her "monitoring" the front porch throughout the day, as well as taking care of 'Grandma' Lillian Billings. At one time she worked at Liberty of Amsterdam. A special thank you to the St. Johnsville Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, doctors, nurses and staff. To leave an online note of sympathy, please visit www.eneafamily.com
