Obituary of James C. Childs

MOHAWK - Mr. James C. Childs, Sr., passed away on Monday morning July 27, 2015 at his Green Street home in Mohawk with beloved wife Mary and children at his side. He was 83 years old. He was born on July 12, 1932 in Ilion, NY, a son of the late William A. & Evelyn (Mergenthaler) Childs and was educated in Mohawk schools. His marriage to the former Mary S. Myers took place on September 7, 1957 in Mohawk. Jim was a Korean War Veteran having served our country for 18 months. Upon honorable discharge holding the rank of Corporal, he was awarded a Combat Infantry Badge, a Korean War Medal, a Presidential Citation Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. He then went on to serve for 35 years in the National Guard. Jim retired as a Laborer - Truck Driver with the New York State Department of Transportation out of Herkimer. After the service he worked for many years with H.P. Snyder Company in Little Falls as a plater. He was a member and longtime usher with Blessed Sacrament Church of Mohawk and had been a member for many years of the Crowley Barnum Mohawk American Legion Post #25, having served as a Sergeant of Arms. He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 58 years Mary, his children, James Childs and his wife Mary of Mohawk, William Childs of Ilion, Mark Childs and his wife Mary of Camillus, NY, and grandchildren, Jessica Childs, Zachary Childs (Katie), Mark Childs, William Childs, and Tasha Childs, great - grandchildren, Angel, Sammy, Isabella, and a great-grandson 'on the way,' his siblings, Ernie Childs, Edward Childs (Regina), Emmett Childs (Hazel), William Childs, Pearl Dunn (Tim), and Mary Urich (Gary), a brother - in - law, Richard Myers, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Charles. Funeral services will be held Thursday July 30, 2015 at 10:15 AM from The Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 North Washington Street in Herkimer (formerly Holleran Funeral Services) and at 11 a.m. at the Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Very Rev. Mark Cunningham, sacramental minister, assisted by Sister Mary Jo Tallman, parish life director. Interment will be in Mohawk Cemetery in the Village with full military honors. Calling hours will be held Wednesday July 29, from 5 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home at 220 North Washington Street in Herkimer. The Crowley Barnum Mohawk American Legion Post #25 will conduct services at 6:30 PM at the funeral home. Funeral Directors Harry J. & Kevin E. Enea (315) 866-1011 have arranged services.
