HERKIMER - Past Village of Mohawk Fire Chief John T. Shields died on Sunday August 16, 2015 in Herkimer, NY. The family is very grateful for the care received at the Valley Health Services. He was born on December 12, 1918 in Newburgh, New York, a son to the late John T. & Agnes (Collins) Shields. He has lived in the Mohawk/Herkimer areas for many years. John was a World War II Veteran, United States Army. Upon honorable discharge in 1946 he held the rank Surgical Technician, Fifth Grade. He was married to Eleanor Guzzo who died in 1971. On August 4, 1974 he married Judy A. Ritter in Elmira, NY, a 41 year union. He was last employed with the Library Bureau in Herkimer, retiring in 1975 as a Traffic Manager. He was a member of St. Francis de Sales Church. John served as Village of Mohawk Fire Chief. He was an exempt member of the Mohawk Fire Department as well as the New York State Sheriff's Association and the NYS Association of Fire Chief's. He was a member of the Herkimer Elk's Lodge, the Mohawk American Legion Crowley Barnum Post #25 and the AARP. He is survived by his wife, Judy, a brother Francis Shields and his wife Barbara of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Mary, Helen, Margaret, Agatha, Anna, and Dorothy. Funeral services will be held on Friday August 21, 2015 at 10:30 AM from The Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 North Washington Street in Herkimer followed by a funeral Mass which will be celebrated on Friday at 11:00 AM at St. Francis de Sales Church, North Bellinger Street in Herkimer with the Very Rev. Mark Cunningham, Pastor, officiating. Interment with full military honors at the Village of Mohawk Cemetery will immediately follow the service. Calling hours at the funeral home on North Washington Street will be Thursday August 20 from 6 until 8 PM. The following organizations will meet at the specified times during the wake service. The Herkimer Elk's Lodge at 6:30 PM for ritualistic service, the Mohawk American Legion at 7:00 PM for service and the Mohawk Fire Department will meet in a body at 7:30 PM for a brief service in John's honor.
