Obituary of Robert J. DeCarr

ILION: Robert J. "Bob" DeCarr, 94, a long time Ilion resident, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 3, 2015 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica with the love and support of his family at his side. Born on July 25, 1921 in Brasher Falls, NY he was the son of the late Albert and Eva (Dunn) DeCarr. Raised and educated locally, he lived for many years in the Dolgeville, Herkimer and Ilion areas and attended Little Falls Schools. A proud veteran of World War II, he honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corp and was wounded at Guadalcanal. On October 12, 1946, Bob was united in marriage to the former Mary H. Ward; the couple sharing a union of 27 years before her passing on November 18, 1973. He later married the former Edith P. (Cobb) Henrickson who predeceased him in May of 2005. During his working life, Bob worked for several years at Herkimer County BOCES as a custodian and also worked for many years at the Herkimer Central School District. The patriarch of his family, he was their greatest hero. Caring and humble, Bob was a wonderful father, and a devoted grandfather to the generations that followed. He enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles with his granddaughters, loved fishing and was a competitive card player. A talented baseball player, he played semi pro ball in his younger years and was a faithful fan of the NY Yankees. Bob had a great devotion to his faith and the Knights of Columbus and was a fifty year member of the Herkimer K of C Council #579, past Grand Knight, past Faithful Navigator (4th Degree), was a life member of the Herkimer County Marine Corp League, and a faithful parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer. He is survived by his children, Robert "Jim" DeCarr and wife Margaret of Herkimer, John DeCarr and wife Regina of Rochester, Julie DeCarr of Herkimer, Mary Kay Davis of Dolgeville, Patricia DeCarr and her companion Gary Spanfelner of Herkimer and Ann Smith of Ilion; as well as 15 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. He also leaves a brother, Harold DeCarr and wife Margie of Utica, many nieces, nephews and cousins. He also leaves a faithful friend Honey. He is predeceased by a son, Joseph DeCarr; grandsons, Robert and James Scott DeCarr; son-in-law Jon Davis, and brothers, Carl, Don and Charles DeCarr. Herkimer K of C Council #579 members will meet at the funeral home at 6:00 PM. The family would like to acknowledge the staff at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Special Care Unit and Intensive Care Unit for their care of Dad. We would also like to thank Dr. Gerry Love and Dr. S. Dang for their years of professional service for our Dad. Special thank you to Sister Mary Jo Tallman and Blessed Sacrament Parish; Sister and the Parish family were very welcoming to our family. Those wishing to express an act of kindness may make a donation to St. Francis de Sales School or the HARC Capital Campaign; envelopes will be available at the funeral home. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, Ilion, NY 13357 (Town of Frankfort) 315-894-8000 on Tuesday, September 8, 2015 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM.
